Get an Injunction (New Republic Calls on Obama to Stop Koran Burning Protest)
The New Republic ^ | Wednesday, September 8, 2010 | Martin Peretz

The Dove World Training Center in Gainesville, Florida and its pastor Perry (sic) Jones plan a Koran bonfire on the ninth anniversary of the World Trade Center-Pentagon enormity.

But it is disgusting. And it is disgusting no matter how many people believe the act would be and should be protected by the First Amendment.

In fact, it is uncivilized. I believe that the Obama administration should go to the Supreme Court or maybe tactically to the most sensible and civilized appellate court and seek an injunction against this atrocity that 1. will encourage Muslim madmen to respond in kind and 2. will also encourage primitive Christians to extend and expand the auto da fé.

It's easy to spot Pissant. Just look for a old guy wearing a tin-foil hat, driving a 1993 Saturn with a “Hunter 2012” bumper sticker and an inflatable Sarah Palin doll in the passenger street.

I absolutely agree. The US govt and the entire MSM are wanting to use the power of the state to stop this protest (however misguided) from happening. The same parties would never think of calling for any effort to stop an atheist from burning a Bible or defacing a crucifix.

There would be nothing said, indeed, if anything, they would applaud the one doing the burning or defacing.

I’d forgot about that.

Thanks for the reminder.

**I think this guy shouldn’t be burning qurans, but he has the constitutional right to do so...just like the imam...he has the right to build at ground zero, but he shouldn’t.**

Why are people comparing these two as if they are the same? The only thing that connects these two incidents is the blatant hypocricy of our “leaders”. 3000 people were brutally murdered at Ground Zero. People jumped to their deaths because they didn’t want to be burned alive! Some were burned alive! This guy is burning books. When he throws a few terrorists/muslims in his fire and burns them then call me. Otherwise these comparisons are horsesh*t.

Asking them to stop is one thing - there is no court authority, however, that can supercede the first amendment of the United States Constitution.

Unless you have seen all his posts - it’ wise for you to NOT comment. Don’t assume you know it all and take the liberty to preach to me! Got it?

Yes he is, and that's why the left is getting themselves a pant-load.

With Bush in the WH they had someone they could hide behind and let him protect them. With Zippo they don't.

Whatever you say, bloss. Looks like I'm in good company...

But then, when some yahoo wants to burn his own Koran...

...we suddenly hear nothing more from the ruling class about the First Amendment and private property.

We hear, instead, only about “sensitivity” and “deeply hurt feelings” and “bad ideas.”

And they wonder why we get angry.

You’re an idiot because asking someone not to do something and demanding the government coerce him into not doing something are, believe it or not, different. Night and day different.

If your lunatic Palin hatred blinds you to the difference between those two points of view, you don’t belong on this site.

Re-read my words. You are inferring lotsa nonsense.

But at least I know your despise Precious’ gum flapping on this issue.

“So, will one person burning Korans really “cause” problems that didn’t already exist? Would millions of people burning Korans send a “we won’t take this sh*t” message to people already hell-bent on destroying all that is free and good? Or do we await further instructions on how to appease the unappeasable?”

My thoughts from another thread:

C’mon, baby, light my fire.

Burning anyone’s sacred books is despicable, but why not just seek a blanket injunction against the First Amendment, New Republic, and just be done with that whole freedom of expression thing once and for all?

**Burning anyone?s sacred books**

Will you please show me what part of the Koran is sacred? They use the Koran as justification to burn People! How in the hell is burning a book the same thing?

Reminds me of Palin and Flipper begging the pastor to stop

So who is "Flipper"? If you're referring to some politician, you've got to be more specific.

Wonder what you think of this ......

Still trying to make up own mind. (Okay, okay, mark me down as flunking "grasps complex issues quickly".)

I have not seen, in searching TV "Nooze" commentary (particularly CBS's), any attempt to discern, or even disclose, much less analyze, the Gainesville preacher's motive for wanting to burn Korans.

It could be a response specifically to the Victory Mosque in Manhattan. It could be a response to worldwide jihad. They don't say.

Not that that would make a lot of difference in evaluating his proposed action, but I suspect a vigorous JournoList-type effort here to de-link Gainesville from Ground Zero and isolate on this preacher as some kind of hate-puppet right-wing icon.

And change the subject of national discourse from Project Cordoba and Obama's economic failures and race-baiting to "right-wing intolerance/inchoate terrorism". We will now turn to the pressing national problem, of how to police up all those bitterly clinging typical white people who need bitch-slapping back into their trashy doublewides back in the spooky, Hitchcockian piney woods.
