The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue has no special authority to speak for “the Vatican.”

If Benedict came out on this issue, or even the local bishop in Florida, then one could say it was the official voice of legitimate Catholic authority.

The PCID is just another goofy initiative created out of V2 that issues all kinds of ridiculous opinions. This kind of muddled thinking results in, for example, the infamous Koran Kiss of JPII.

Having said all of that, Terry Jones (the pastor) strikes me as a publicity-seeking con man who apparently supports the nutjobs of Westboro baptist church.

We could use a better frontman in defending the West against Islam, a role the Catholic Church had historically done but, due to internal weaknesses and muddled post-V2 thinking, has abdicated that role.

You're completely right. I mean, heck, not even 100-200 years ago, you had Catholics burning Protestant tracts and bible translations in the U.S. because of the false teachings contained therein.

Why then doesn't the Vatican come out LOUDLY and say so?

"In his weekly general audience in late May of 1999, Pope John Paul II addressed Muslims in a series discussing "interreligious dialog." He quotes from the 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church n. 841 which states, "... together with us they (Muslims) adore the one, merciful, God." In the Pope's mind, Allah and YAHWEH are one and the same God??
