The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.
Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.
The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.
General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.
""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...
"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."
"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

Shoot them if they are upset. No one here in the USA went out shooting muzzies after 9/11. What makes their POS religion so special? Why do they get special treatment? Does the 1st amendment only apply to f’ng islam?
Screw them, nuke mecca.
YOU were the first to insult and YOU were the first to whine, making this post, among other things, amusing.
Facts are stubborn things. Perhaps you should consider actually using them some day.....
Stay well, yourself.
When Muslim nations attack us, we should reduce them to rubble and send them back to the Stone Age. Let their neighbors rebuild them. I don't advocate insulting them or otherwise inciting them to violence; however, I surely do come out in favor of slagging Mecca if that would help.
Let us use our Freedom of Speech to get our own house in order. We have a serious lack in representation within Congress. That is far more important than rattling the cages of animals.
You also have a great day!
Show me the post where I insulted you, OhioWfan.
If you cannot then I will consider accepting your apology.
If you are a big enough person, that is.
I'll just assume you confused me with someone else - an honest mistake.
I don't believe you're the kind of person to purposely lie about something like that.
If you're a big enough person, please apologize.
I'm sorry I responded to your insult with another insult. I've admitted I shouldn't have already, but I am sorry that I did.
As for the whining, see post 262, re my post 242.
I'm sorry I responded to anything you've said skeeter. You guys all have the same tactic. What you do, you accuse others of doing. You're not worth the aggravation.
(Oh.......sorry about the "roy" or "dale" comment too. I have no idea what gender you are. I should have left your "happy trails" silliness alone.).
Now I'm sure that no one else is interested in this 'discussion' we're having, so I'll try to do my part to end it. It's a waste of both of our time.
On the topic of the thread, one more time. A bunch of Americans burning Korans is stupid and irresponsible, and General Petraeus is correct in pointing out that it may well endanger our troops. And that has absolutely nothing to do with what you posted in post 177 about our 'pulling out of their now.'
Absolutely nothing. It was nonsensical.
Now you may put your money where your fingers are, and go burn a Koran on 9/11 and fill some emotional need you have.
I'm going to remember the terror against us and pray for the families who lost so much on this day, and pray for the country as we reel under a Muslim-sympathizing Marxist "president."
You're free to do whatever you want. For now, this is still America.
We both hold the same level of affection for "Those Guys".
In my later years, however, I am beginning to appreaciate and emulate the gentlemanly behavior of our Founders. I don't think insults will help in the quest for resolution to problems. They are good only for picking a fight. I don't think it is ethical to pick a fight that others must wage on my behalf.
If I were sitting out there in the sand, I'd probably be a problem child for command. ;-D
You’re too quick on the trigger there, Roy. ;)
You really think if they decide not to burn a koran that a soldier’s life will be saved, that the Taliban guy will say, “Nah, I got him in my sites, but because they didn’t burn the book, I won’t pull the trigger today!” ... that is naive. That jerk will pull the trigger whether or not the book is burned ... that’s what they do. They, unlike us, know they are in a war ... we’re still trying to justify it in our own minds. Maybe you’d like to sit down and have tea with them? You and Obama, not me.
“I wonder when Petreaus is going to figure out that there is no such thing as a moderate muslim.”
While they are probably in the minority, to be fair, there are some moderate/democratic Muslims. Mark Levin had one on his show (the replay was yesterday, if you wish to look it up).
“How does he think our soldiers who are Christian felt about having bibles confiscated and burned by our own military?”
Good point.
Also, while Petraeus has some good traits, I was extremely disappointed that he did not change the rules of engagement.
Wow. If you considered this an insult then you've got issues that far exceed my ability to diagnose.
btw, I'm very healthy emotionally......you know.......a grown up. And I apologize when I've been wrong. How about you?
I also have no emotional need to burn anything for no logical reason, either.
(Which is why I'm on this thread in the first place. I figured some stability was needed among the hotheads and nutjobs who post to fulfill some need they have to pretend to be tough guys while sitting in Mom's basement, you know?)
Oh......and do let us know how that book burning goes when the rest of us are remembering 9/11 with the respect it deserves....
Well, today I did it again and I'm sorry.
“Coalition to Honor Ground Zero: Burning a Koran on September 11th irresponsible and wrong
by Editors on September 7, 2010
STATEMENT FROM THE COALITION TO HONOR GROUND ZERO
The Coalition to Honor Ground Zero has learned that Minister Terry Jones has stated he will be burning a Koran on September 11th.
We find such an idea irresponsible and wrong.
We uphold the Ministers freedom of speech and assembly yet with rights come responsibilities; we urge him not to go ahead with his plans of burning a Peoples religious book.”
If only Imam Rauf, and associates, had this much class.
I am now in my later years and have decided that political correctness sucks and I no longer tolerate it it. To each his own. We were attacked on a religious basis and I think the whole religion is the enemy. To be sensitive to their beliefs is just plain stupid. Ask the British about Neville Chamberlain.
I'm just sarcastic and honest, and you 'drew' yourself into this by posting nonsense to me in the first place, insulting me, and then whining about my reaction. Stop blaming me for what you did here. I won't be waiting for your apology. I know you can't bring yourself to admit you were wrong.
Oh....and do enjoy the book burning.
I'm not even in the slightest sensitive too their beliefs. I just think it is not responsible to the stir the pot only at the expense of the guys sitting in the sand. I just can't take the approach that you do: That it is OK to enrage the enemy so that they attack those who now serve in the war zone. I think it would be terrific if you would insult the Muslims at your own expense. If you want to be a bullet magnet, do it at your own risk not at others'.
It really surprises me that there are people who imagine themselves to be responsible adults when they incite violence to others in the safety of their church or home. I guess you are too full of your own importance to understand.
