The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.
Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.
The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.
General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems – not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.
""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...
"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."
"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

Oh, I certainly have no intention of having anything to do with an organization calling itself “Doves Ministries.”
And I also recognize that those who are raising a fuss over this have had nothing to say when Christian symbols are desecrated — sometimes at taxpayers’ expense.
I am not a Christian and this still offends me.
I think it is useful to draw them out and let them know there are still those who refuse to lay down and accept Muslim domination. If that simple act of burning a Koran makes them show their true colors, it will help wake the ignorant masses to the danger Islam presents to civilization.

Are you actually saying that I'm not a Christian and support the UN because I don't believe Americans should have ritual book-burnings?
And are you presuming that these book-burners are being led by the Holy Spirit as they were in Acts, and not acting out of emotion?

Besides which, I happen to believe Gen. Petraeus is right about the very real probability that this irresponsible action would endanger our troops.
And that, IMO, would be a tragic end to an unhealthy action.
You are piecing together a nice but irrelevant patchwork which has no bearing on the wisdom of what “DOVE” is setting up to do.
Our troops might die for this 'right.' NO big deal. We have the right.

I have always had an impression, left over from writings about him during his tenure at Fort Campbell, that the General was a Democrat, but quite in his political views.
I have always been astounded that there is an assumption on this site that he is a Republican and a conservative one at that. I think we would really be reeling if he retired in a year or two and ran as a Dem.

What is putting their lives in danger is the ridiculous Rules of Engagement they’ve been given that stops them from blowing our enemies to Kingdom Come.

I think you are overstating the impact of what this little church is doing, and I’m convinced Petraeus is just saying what his master in the White House is telling him to say.
This is none of Gen. Petraeus’s business. This is a political statement and I wonder if the Obama DOD pushed him into saying this.
I'm sure it will make you feel real good.......but it will mean nothing, and you, not Obama, nor anyone else, will potentially put our soldiers at greater risk.
(Logic: If Obama can harm the troops with the ROE, why shouldn't I? Is that it?)
