KABULThe top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said the planned burning of Qurans on Sept. 11 by a Florida church could put the lives of American troops in danger and damage the war effort.
Gen. David Petraeus said the Taliban would exploit the demonstration for propaganda purposes, drumming up anger toward the U.S. and making it harder for allied troops to carry out their mission of protecting Afghan civilians.
"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," Gen. Petraeus said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community."

Did Petraeus condemn the flotilla?
Did Petraeus condemn the murders of the innocent Israeli’s last week?
Sounds like we are doing a bang-up job with befriending the enemy and teaching them to love us. By all means, no one ever do anything to upset the Muslims, because it might make them act like Muslims, and that is dangerous.
Did Petraeus complain about all those Egyptian protesters dancing on the American flag to show their displeasure with this Koran burning?
“... the safety of the troops are the first concern of the general, especially General Petraeus.”
Huh. I thought they were in a war zone, fighting people who were trying to kill them. I also thought, that this being a war, they were supposed to be trying to kill THE ENEMY, not MAKING NICE WITH THEM.
If that is not why they are they should GTFO.
I also thought it was the duty of any CO to give his men the ability to protect themselves with reasonable ROE while in a war zone, but I am clearly wrong about that, too, eh, genius?
Sorry, I misunderstood.
Thanks for the benefit of your years of experience in leading men at war, though. Don’t think I appreciate it.
Imho General, just kill the Taliban and the problem is solved. The church here utilizes their First amendment rights, and less of the Afghan population is terrorized and killed. Win win situation, don't you think?
5.56mm
I too condemn the burning of Korans.
It’s a waste of perfectly good toilet paper.
I think the poster was asking for “rationalizing” the dumb move by this Church. It seems like a pathetic stunt to gain some name recognition.
Mind your own Business, General!!!
It is none of your concern what some Church in Florida does or doesn’t do!!!
Freedom of speech? Like the right to build a victory mosque at Ground Zero.
“You have obviously have never served in the Military or otherwise you would know that the safety of the troops are the first concern of the general, especially General Petraeus”
If you have served in the military, then you know that terms like “FUBAR” and “BOHICA” didn’t come to being because Generals have the safety and well-being of the troops always at the forefront.
This operation was never intended to end in an actual military victory (GWB said:”Victory will not look like the ones our fathers and grandfathers achieved. There will be no surrender ceremony on the deck of a battleship.”)
So tell me how the safety of our troops is actually the first concern of the general again?
Just curious . . . considering Gen. Petraeus' recent work in Iraq, would you say he "made nice" with the Iraqis?
“Just curious . . . considering Gen. Petraeus’ recent work in Iraq, would you say he “made nice” with the Iraqis?”
No ... why, were we talking about Iraq?
I’d suggest after the past two weeks in Afghanistan he focus on his duties there.
Moslems appear to get pretty irrational when they are pissed.
If burning the Quran in Florida pisses them off and makes them irrational, perhaps that will make killing their asses even easier.
There ya go Petraeus.
The only good Islamist is a dead one. Get used to it. And remember, they will kill you in a heartbeat given the chance. It is the ultimate prize for them.
Do not burn them. Feed them to pigs.
You were questioning Petraeus' judgment, so I asked you what you thought of his judgment in Iraq. Perfectly reasonable.
ME: No ... why, were we talking about Iraq?
YOU: You were questioning Petraeus’ judgment, so I asked you what you thought of his judgment in Iraq. Perfectly reasonable.
ME: HUH? My first post was “When did this guy become such a p*ssy.”
Try to keep up. No one is questioning his past. It’s his present that is screwed up. Ambition? Trying to please his new PC bosses? I dunno. Neither do you. My point was that he has changed. Your point eludes me and, apparently, 90% of the posters that posted after I did.
