Obama Comes to Wisconsin, Feingold Disappears

By Patrick McIlheran - September 5, 2010

President Barack Obama's spending Labor Day afternoon in Milwaukee at an annual union festival. It's quite a party: Parade organizers were still looking for volunteers to help carry the giant protest puppets of the Earth Goddess and such. Pity, then, that Russ Feingold, the incumbent Democratic senator in a neck-and-neck race, can't hang out with the president.

But Obama and puppetry just aren't the right atmospherics these days, are they?

Feingold, three terms in office and now tied with a plastics manufacturer no one heard of five months ago, will be at Laborfest earlier in the day. By afternoon, he'll have scampered far from Obama, to a parade in his hometown, Janesville, where the General Motors bailout didn't save the truck plant and unemployment is now double-digit. A spokesman said Feingold asked the White House to change its schedule, but you know how these things go.

Ask yourself: If you were an embattled senator, famously progressive and customarily elected by students, unions, peaceniks and others who dig giant protest puppets, and your state was going to be visited by a president who two years ago drew swooning arena-sized crowds of just such voters, do you think you could rearrange your schedule to absorb his magic?

This is the measure of Obama's fall: Even senators who define the Democrats' leftward edge act like he's got cooties.

I was driving in Northern Wisconsin (the northern parts of 7-8 below) a couple of summers ago and I was shocked that the ONLY radio station I could pickup was NPR. No AM at all.

When you examine a county by county map, it looks completely different. The blue is only along the northern lake shore, about the same area as the radio quiet zone.

I can’t help wondering if someone could invest in an AM station that would carry Rush, Beck, Hannity, etc. whether that zone would flip.

The western part of 4 is dominated by Minnesota lefty media markets.

Typical Democrat when he or she learns Obama will be "paying a visit!"

You know Obama is on the edge of the far-left when a far-left senator like Feingold thinks he, Obama, is further left than he is.

Practically every talk show in western Wisconsin is a conservative one. Rush, Sean, and the rest dominate.

Funny how the GOP disctricts are all within the signal range of Belling and Sykes radio shows.

Is there any chance of getting rid of that lunatic in the 8th?

Why haven’t you heard...Feingold is now a fiscal conservative, just like every other leftist who is facing a tough election battle. That’s the ONLY REASON he shuns an appearance with Hussein! The senator is now just too CONSERVATIVE!!

HA! Obama came down to Georgia (reminds me of a song...) and democratic gubernatorial candidate Boy Barnes took off to Florida!

Too funny

I HAVE BEEN ASKING THAT QUESTIONFOR 20 YEARS.

Ellendra and I drove to the Ren Faire in Bristol, WI today. Saw one of the “Voted Obama? Embarrassed yet?” billboards on our way out of Milwaukee. :-)

How far north were you? WSAU AM covers most of both districts. I've heard people from as far away as Bayfield and Ashland call in to the morning show. They carry Rush, Hannity and Savage live. Next time you're driving through try tuning in 55 AM.

And there were several more billboards that condemned Obama’s policies.
