by Fareed Zakaria September 04, 2010 Nine years after 9/11, can anyone doubt that Al Qaeda is simply not that deadly a threat? Since that gruesome day in 2001, once governments everywhere began serious countermeasures, Osama bin Ladens terror network has been unable to launch a single major attack on high-value targets in the United States and Europe. While it has inspired a few much smaller attacks by local jihadis, it has been unable to execute a single one itself. Today, Al Qaedas best hope is to find a troubled young man who has been radicalized over the Internet, and teach him to stuff his underwear with explosives. I do not minimize Al Qaedas intentions, which are barbaric. I question its capabilities. In every recent conflict, the United States has been right about the evil intentions of its adversaries but massively exaggerated their strength. In the 1980s, we thought the Soviet Union was expanding its power and influence when it was on the verge of economic and political bankruptcy. In the 1990s, we were certain that Saddam Hussein had a nuclear arsenal. In fact, his factories could barely make soap.

agree
Not simplistic at all: just astute understanding and a succinct presentation of what really happened. Thank you.
Now taking out Mecca and Medina with 5kt thermo nukes might have been over the top as a reaction, but then the problem would have been solved since allah would have proven inferior and a false god...
Just saying.
Bump
More idiocy from the Fareed Zakaria-idiot and the libtard rag Newsweek. Shut your doors already...permanently, kkthx. =.=
Fareed is a muslim. What else do you expect?
Ahhh... That's one way to fake up circulation numbers.
We under reacted. A demonstration of nuclear capability on 9/12/01 would have served notice on the Muslim world exactly what was at stake here, and deterred any further assaults on the US, possibly for hundreds of years.
“Nine years after 9/11, can anyone doubt that Al Qaeda is simply not that deadly a threat”
How wonderful hindsight is!! Too bad it ignores - in terns of the status today of Al Queda - all that has taken place since 9/11 to counter Al Queda’s ambitions.
Well, as far as I know, and I don’t know much, it is not a religion of peace and love. It is not a religion of live and let live. It is a religion of conquest. We should be forewarned. They have to be beaten down every few centuries.
“NEVER FORGET””. And never forgive.
Racism!/s
Fareed, don’t take this personally, but “F YOU!”
What an awesome post!!! I totally agree with everything in it!
“The US has the power. It simply lacks the political will to use it.”
That has been the problem for such a long time. You can go back as far as Viet Nam, and probably further, but that is my reference time for what I’ve personally witnessed.
Even in Gulf War I, they stopped short...h/t Colin Powell. He didn’t think the Highway of Death was politically correct enough.
Sheesh!!!
We are too soft...
Thank you for your reply!
Sometimes I feel so inadequate because of the IQ of so many posters here.
However, sometimes I get things right. ;o)
You’re a real sweetie...thank you.
The Spain and London bombings didn’t happen? The Christmas Day attempt? Reid the shoe bomber? Times Square? Is this tool going to continue to live in denial?

"Never forget, this attack was done in the name of Islam."
