H2O: Dangerous Chemical!
A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."
And for plenty of good reasons, since:
it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
it is a major component in acid rain
it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
accidental inhalation can kill you
it contributes to erosion
it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
Forty-three (43) said yes,
six (6) were undecided,
and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.
The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"
He feels the conclusion is obvious.
Man, has this society become DUMB!!!!!!!!!
The first time I heard this joke(story), I fell off my dinosaur laughing.
P.S. I meant the H20 story, not the story of this kid’s science project.
Rush pulled this scam several years ago, but it’s sad-hilarious that the joke always works.
Plus H2O vapor is a green house gas.
Someone should ask this of democratic Reps and Senators running for re-election.
This joke has been around for a while now, but that in itself, just goes to show how clueless and stupid most people are.
Evidently originality wasn’t part of the judging criteria.
Penn and Teller did the Di-Hydrogen Oxide ban petition a number of years ago and sucked in so many brainless liberals it was embarrassing...
Give the kid a break;he did show how the education system has been rotten for years.
I don't know if it actually happened, if it isn't original (therefore it has happened more than once), or if it has never happened. However, I would bet my next year's salary that I could reproduce the results with a simple survey at the mall. So don't be so dismissive of the actual point.
People are incredibly gullible when it comes to "scientific studies." This story is true even if it never happened as stated. Liberals worship science and science is dishonest because it is propounded by dishonest and fallible people. Therefore a high percentage of people who are ignorant of the true nature of Di-Hydrogen Oxide would vote to ban it. So please save me your smart alack post.
Whether it happened or not the POINT is valid.
It bears repeating; repeatedly!
You were taking my post the wrong way.
What I was trying to convey, and not in a smart-aleky way, is that the di-hydrogen monoxide gag has been bouncing around the Internet for at least 10 years in one form or another, so it would be reasonable to assume that a sizable percentage of the population would not fall for it.
Not because they have gotten any smarter, but because it HAS been around for a while, and thus more people are likely to know di-hydrogen monoxide = H2O, even if they do not know anything else about chemistry. I submit that they apparently do not, and that fact does go to show that most people are pretty clueless.
I also agree with your point that you could probably reproduce the same results at any shopping mall.
More than that, I find people to be gullible when they are faced with scientific sounding results. Fear is rampant, and people don't like to admit they don't know what you are actually saying. My simple point is that people are very gullible to scientific BULLHOCKEY.
Sorry, hope I didn't come off as being rude, i just find this very real even if it never actually happened. I'm sure it could be true.
He just went to: http://www.dhmo.org/
Then pretty much copy-n-pasted everything there into a ‘science’ project.
Personally, I think he shoulda done something more original... like asking people to sign a petition banning that unlicensed *AND* unshielded nuclear reactor that bathes us in it’s radiation on a daily basis.
(You know, it hangs up in the sky every day. You can’t miss it.)
And it has a Ph of 7!!!!!
