California bill to ban plastic bags fails

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- California's Senate has voted down a measure that would have banned plastic bags at grocery stores.

The new ban was rejected by a 21 to 14 vote late Tuesday. The ban would have included grocery stores, convenience stores and drugstores.

The California Assembly passed the legislation in June.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had said he would have signed the measure into law, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Environmental groups such as the Sierra Club encouraged Californians to contact their state senators to push for the measure.

The group Heal the Bay produced what it calls a "mockumentary," narrated by actor Jeremy Irons, called "The Majestic Plastic Bag" that charts the life of a plastic bag. The video is on YouTube.

The measure had its opponents, too.

The American Chemistry Council criticized California Assemblywoman Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica, who proposed the bill.

To each his own, but if you’re thinking “save the planet”, I have bad news. Plastic bags aren’t the problem.

Want to save the environment? Mandate that all vibrators must use rechargable batteries.

“How about punishing those who are not responsible enough?”

Punish people whom the government feels is not “responsible enough”?! You’re kidding, yes? Tell me you’re kidding.

How about enforcing litter laws?

The problem comes when garbage is dumped into international waters.

But then no one has ever pushed for the mob to go green.

Thanks, you beat me to it. I’m actually stunned that common sense and public health prevailed in this case. CA usually goes the other way.

Now if we can just repeal the windmills and solar panels mandate and open up some oil fields, sanity may be on its way back in...

LOL

I guess you don’t recycle used plastic bags?

I’ve had plastic bags attach themselves to the
undercarriage of my car and burn.

Something about my car seems to attract them. grrrr

In Taiwan, they charge a nickel per bag. Amazing how many people don't want a bag when they have to pay for it.

A similar tax in Ireland cut bag usage by 90%.

+1 for the people.
-1 for the environuts.

Many people recycle these bags for dog poop, etc. And most of us (particularly those who walk) don’t want to carry ugly bags everywhere just in case we decide to make a purchase.

Not saying there should be a law. Just saying, I use my bags and I hate the plastic crap that tears. If anyone else has the want to, they shouldn’t hesitate to do so.

The grocery store has asked that I stop bringing mine back to place in their recycle bins.

Really big dogs, +100 lbs.

Our issues here are with Northern Nazis and other Aliens that want to impose the FAILED liberal Agenda that sank the Rust belt.
Notes on coming Elections: how many candidates are born and raised here?
How many want to see us adopt LIBERAL polices?
“Northern Nazis” does not include all YANKEES!

The plastic crap DOES tear. It’s made from recycled milk jugs. Almost makes you wonder why those are recycled if that is to be the end product.

The stores I’ve seen that use them know that they tear so they double bag every plastic bag. And it is not uncommon to see the baggers having 5-10 little bags of purchases for one customer.

Paper grocery sacks aren’t what they once were either and some stores now double bag those as well.
