Romer: Lack of 'Recovery Act signs' Fuels Public Perception of Obama Failure

Not enough of these signs have been seen around the country, feeding the public perception of failure of Obama's $862 billion stimulus spending, according to retiring chief economic adviser Christina Romer. Photo via CNS News.

Yes, that is what is in Christina Romer's farewell speech to be given later today at the National Press Club as she steps down as head of Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

Reuters and USA Today report based on White House released excerpts previewing the speech:

"Because the final bill was a mixture of hundreds of measures, many of which don't come with Recovery Act signs or easily identifiable links to the Act, it is been hard for people to see what the Act has done," she said.

"But it is precisely because it works through existing programs and spreads funds widely that it could get out quickly and reap large benefits," Romer said.

Romer said she was "proud of the recovery actions we have taken" and said they made the difference between a second Great Depression and "a slow but genuine recovery."

CNS News reported earlier this month that the Obama administration is pressuring contractors to display Recovery Act signs such as this one:

"What a waste of money. It’s like Obama needs to have his initials on anything he touches to show he was there. To make sure he gets the proper credit for every tiny thing that he might have hand a hand in. Childish."

Reminds me a little image that was around, back in the day. I don't have a copy of it, but maybe some FReeper does.

KILROY WAS HERE!!

This has got to be about the stupidest statement ever intentionally made by a public official. And that’s going some...

The signs are everywhere sweetie!

Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- The small city of East Point, Georgia, took steps to prevent chaos from breaking out Thursday, a day after more than 30,000 people unexpectedly turned out to pick up public housing applications

Good point.

Obama should have had one of those moronic signs with him at the oval office yesterday.

Yep, one of the recent talking points from liberals is that Porkulus wasn’t effective because it wasn’t big enough.

Allocating $800 billion wasn’t enough money. If only we had been able to spend a few trillion, then it would have had an impact. And the blame goes to Republicans, because the Republicans held the stimulus to $800 billion. Good Democrats wanted to spend more, so it’s the Republicans’ fault that Porkulus has failed. At least those are the talking points.

They should add something to the signs that ARE up, giving details on how much “per long-term employment job” has been spent on this boondoggle. So that the public can get a real understanding of how it has benefited all of us.

Nonsense. All of the “missing” signs are in the non-existant Congressional districts.

Come to think of it, that must be where the economic recovery is...

I’m surprised that they haven’t embossed his sig on all the asphalt jobs being done around the country.

Romer said she was "proud of the recovery actions we have taken" and said they made the difference between a second Great Depression and "a slow but genuine recovery."

So if the results are so great, even though she said that we can't see them, why is Christine jumping ship? Can it be that even worse economic disasters are just around the corner, and Christine wants no part of the blame?

This is akin to the Beauty pageant contestant who said this:

Question: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the United States on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Miss Teen South Carolina: "I personally believe the U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, uh...people out there in our nation don't have maps, and, uh, I believe that our education like such as South Africa and, uh, the Iraq everywhere like, such as and...I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., err, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our...

So the answer to why people think President Obama is a failure is that we didn't buy enough signs telling people that Obama is not a failure. Obviously, the Obama administration needs to get Caitlin Upton into this position right away to take over for Romer. My guess is that Caitlin is actually smarter than Romer, and she's been on the Amazing Race, and she is a model, so she already has international and media experience needed for the job. :-)

That’s astounding. We have seen a Recovery Act sign on a highway here in GA since at least January - with the usual “construction 1500 feet” etc. signs...continuing to a “Construction next 7 miles” sign and not one lick of construction has taken place since the sign/signs went up. The 7 miles one sign mentions is a brand new part of the highway system completed about 2 years ago.

We’ve seen the signs, Romer - we just don’t see any WORK or WORKERS!

How about:

"This Project funded by FORCED TAXATION on others in the USA, for YOUR benefit. Please say Thank You to our MESSIAH"

And with these priceless (and truly historical) words, Ms. Romer tells the country that she is the very model of the modern obediently faithful Keynesian fool.

After a decade of exporting our factory seed corn to the world we have nothing to recover with. People’s credit cards and house ATM are tapped out in driving the consumer economy. Buying power has eroded. Democrats think the government should provide the missing cash and Republicans think that reducing taxes will provide the cash.

Memo to both - your talking placebos. We are talking 15,000,000 jobs. Recovery awaits someone hearing the job sucking sound, first heard a long time ago by Perot. We have to make more of what we used to make or forget recovery.

Does this bimbo own a sign company that has those contracts?

The posting of these signs is another empty boondoggle of this administration.
