JAKARTA (Reuters) Thousands of Indonesians were evacuated from the slopes of a volcano on Sunday after it erupted for the first time in more than 400 years, spewing out lava and sending smoke and dust 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) into the air.
Mount Sinabung, in the north of the island of Sumatra, began erupting around midnight after rumbling for several days, prompting some villagers to panic before the mass evacuation got under way.
Indonesia is on the so-called Pacific Rim of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and geological fault lines triggering frequent earthquakes around the Pacific Basin. The eruption triggered the highest red volcano alert.
Two people died, one from breathing problems and the other from a heart attack, and two suffered injuries in road accidents as trucks, ambulances and buses were mobilized in the rescue operation.
"This is the first time since 1600 that Sinabung has erupted and we have little knowledge in terms on its eruptive patterns," said Surono, head of Indonesia's vulcanology center.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
We have just the Indonesian that needs to go walk on the lava to calm that there volcano down...
Well yes, I would think so!
One of the most tectonically active regions of the planet,
without which none of us would be around to discuss it.
CNN’s Rick Sanchez could’ve predicted this... it’s warm in Indonesia, ya’ know!
Let me give them a clue then. It appears that about every 400 years or so it erupts.
Waiting on the inevitable global warming lawsuit on the wealthy nations...
There’s a +super-volcano” somewheres in the region that is said to be due for an eruption..could this be a precursor?
It’s going to be a really cold winter. Combine the solar minimum with all the volcanoes, we might have the coldest winter in 100 years.
right
They better flee ... it’s million of degrees under the earth (according to Al Gore) and Sumatra isn’t in the arctic where it’s too cold for volcanoes (according to Rick Sanchez).
I have learned so much from the left wing climate experts that I know all about this sort of thing now.
No doubt it’s an anthropogenic eruption.
We can expect more erruptions as Out Of Control Climate Change progresses!
AGW, driven by Run Away Made Made Green House Gas emissions, is the Number One Cause of these increasing frequent eruptions!
Hot air is less dense than cool air, so the milions of miles of atmosphere over the volcanoes is suddenly putting less downwrd pressure on the lava, (ed note: DUers would not be expected to know the difference between magma and lava.) making it easier to come out of the volcanoes!
To make it worse, as the lava rises, it gets hotter because of all the AGW heating of the earth, so comes out extra hot, making the air avbove the volcanoes even lighter, letting even MORE lava out!
WE ARE DOOMED, unless we quit burning Evil Fossil Fuels, outlaw air conditioners, put a Bird-Kill-Free windmill on every house; and all begin driving Plug-In-During-Off-Peak-Only Electric Vehicles!
Absolutely. Mother Earth is just pissed off that George Bush was ever conceived.
Hey Leftard Lurkers, keep chanting Bush Lied, People Died and perhaps Mother will calm down.
