For the young, unemployment hits record

While the national unemployment rate stuck at 9.5 percent this summer, the youth unemployment rate hit 19.1 percent in July. It was the highest midsummer jobless rate for the 16-to-24 age group on records dating back to 1948, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday.

The jobless rates for young people in July — typically the peak month for youth employment — jumped from 10.5 percent in 2007 to 14 percent in 2008 to 18.5 percent in 2009. This year, fewer than half (48.9 percent) of that population group held jobs in July. That also was a record — for the lowest share of 16- to 24-year-olds to be employed in the month.

Oddly enough, the original title does not use juvenile "all caps".

For the young, unemployment hits record

Curious, that.

Your caps-lock key is stuck.

You might look into this new "copy and paste" technology.

All the cool kids are doing it.

One wonders if anyone who does the reporting realizes just how serious this is. For starters, you've got young people who are going further in debt for advanced degrees, instead of being able to get out there and start a career and a life.

An acquaintance expressed something that stuck with me. She has a son who's 28, and has never been able to get in an established, career-path, full time job. What she fears is that anyone who doesn't develop a work ethic by the time they're 30 will just never make the transition.

Are we going to have what's almost a generation of people who never even have the opportunity to develop a work ethic?

Oh keep in mind that we’re raising the retirement age to fix Social Security as well. Few open slots at top equals fewer open slots at bottom. The next decade should be interesting.

Gee Whiz! It looks like raising the minimum wage and allowing unlimited illegal immigration increases teenager unemployment rates. How unexpected is that???

In spite of this our two local McDonalds have guest student workers from Russia..mostly cute blonde Russians who stand out like bears in a nudist colony amongst all the Hispanic workers.

I would advise kids today to do whatever it takes to 'work' - paid or unpaid. My daughter starts an 'intern' position next week, unpaid. They want her for her business computer application skills, but can't really afford another body. She just wants experience (finished college in four years, but never worked).

I don't mind her living at home, at least she's working everyday, and I feel pretty good that she'll have a paid position by the end of the year.

That number may be going up around here - the DOJ just “clarified” a rule that now stipulates that homeschool kids cannot work until public school lets out.

My husband and several folks we know have some homeschoolers working for them during the day. Either they are let go, or some other teen employees in the evenings get let go. Jobs lost. Thanks again, nanny state.

I'd say that 2 things affect this:

1. Illegals have lots of teen jobs.

2. The minimum wage keeps employers from hiring.

Both brought to you by their sponsors, liberal politicians.

Although those two factors do contribute to unemployment among young adults, the fact that the Congress and President intentionally and with malice aforethought and successfully drove the economy into a severe, semi-permanent recession (or dare I say, outright depression?) over the past two years also drives unemployment for the inexperienced at the margins.

And the official unemployment rate doesn’t include all those young adults not even trying to seek work, which is most of them. Some of these have legitimate reasons (e.g., full time devotion to education, stay-at-home mothers, too ill) but most probably don’t. They just don’t seek work because none of their friends have jobs either, or perhaps they don’t know how to find jobs (which is almost as difficult as finding unicorns in today’s economy), or they found easier money in subsisting off government welfare benefits.
