The Obama administration has shelved the planned prosecution of Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, the alleged coordinator of the Oct. 2000 suicide attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, according to a court filing.
The decision at least temporarily scuttles what was supposed to be the signature trial of a major al-Qaeda figure under a reformed system of military commissions. And it comes practically on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the attack, which killed 17 sailors and wounded dozens when a boat packed with explosives ripped a hole in the side of the warship in the port of Aden.
In a filing this week in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the Justice Department said that "no charges are either pending or contemplated with respect to al-Nashiri in the near future."
The statement, tucked into a motion to dismiss a petition by Nashiri's attorneys, suggests that the prospect of further military trials for detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has all but ground to a halt, much as the administration's plan to try the accused plotters of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in federal court has stalled.
Only two cases are moving forward at Guantanamo Bay, and both were sworn and referred for trial by the time Obama took office. In January 2009, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates directed the Convening Authority for Military Commissions to stop referring cases for trial, an order that 20 months later has not been rescinded.

I was thinking yesterday that I would rather have Putin as president of the U.S. than Obama. That’s pretty bad.
To me, it seems like this trial would be an opportunity for the Admin. & dems to look tough on terrorism and could help swing some independent votes.
Though if Holder isn’t planning a very tough prosecution, that wouldn’t work.

Then again, I’m not certain that the U.S. is Barry Soetero’s own country.
I hope at leaast one of the probes planned post election is of the current Justice department (a term that is meaningless in this administration) and of Eric Holder. He must go.

You are right about that. Even if Obama was really born in Hawaii, which I doubt, he has no love for America.

Either November elections come and the left’s power is curtailed (will they allow it?) or expect an October surprise.
I fear the “powers that be” have way too much at stake now.

The President of the United States proves once again that his loyalty is for Islam and not for the United States of America. This is an outrage. For the President to give a terrorist a “pass” for killing our military personnel is proof this man is NOT QUALIFIED to be anywhere near the White House.

It is not what he says (or reads from the Teleprompter) ... he "is" what he "does." And he has again given us further proof of his real loyalty. To support dropping these charges and not fighting to maintain them is close to a treasonous act. I would assume the dead sailors would feel the same.
We must reflect our outrage at this egregious action in November in the voting booth: If you remember nothing else when you vote...
