Two days after being trounced in the Arizona GOP Senate primary, former Rep. J.D. Hayworth still hasn’t called Sen. John McCain to congratulate him.
And it’s not as if Tuesday night’s outcome was in doubt for very long. McCain eviscerated Hayworth by 24 percentage points and The Associated Press called the race not even a full two hours after the polls closed.
The four-term senator quickly took the stage at the downtown Phoenix Convention Center to declare victory and make it an early night. But the McCain campaign is still a bit surprised it never heard from Hayworth, a former six-term congressman who lost his Scottsdale congressional seat in 2006.
“The Hayworth campaign actually had reached out to us this past weekend to get the appropriate number for him to call for concession,” one McCain aide told POLITICO.
The aide said Hayworth’s spokesman Mark Sanders even tested it on Monday morning to make sure the traditional post-election ritual went smoothly. But the call never came.
Sanders told POLITICO Hayworth had no plans of calling McCain. A message seeking an explanation on why was not immediately returned.

Yes, our pols are expected to be civil and to be graceful losers. For years I wore (and still own) a ‘SoreLoserman’ t-shirt. Hate to see that on our side. And, hell, even Gore gave a concession speech and wished “W” well.
On the Senate floor, do you REALLY think that Jeff Sessions means it when he refers to “my good friend from Vermont” ??? Shall we dispense with addressing ‘the honorable gentlewoman from CA?” Call it hypocrisy or anything you wish, but it maintains at least the veneer of civility. Without that, what are we ?
I ‘get’ the hatred for McCain, but that is not the issue here. The issue here is about J.D. Hayworth’s civility and political sportsmanship, and so far he disappoints.
I heard it reported that McCain had $20 million left over from his FAILED PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN and spent $21 million in this primary. He started *campaigning* against JD a month before JD even anounced he was running.

Really? I thought Algore called W up and informed him that he was fighting the results in court. Then said "you don't have to get snippy about it" when W didn't respond positively to that.
That was also because of the mortgage bubble. I worked for a real estate agent and Arizona was a hot market. sorry to hear about the influx. It will never return to it’s previous state unless there is a spiritual revival.

After the decision was made at the SCOTUS, sore loser Gore made a concession speech after calling “W.” The two contests are not close to comparable in any case. But, won’t Gore long be remembered as just that, a sore loser? Does JD want that as his legacy?

This says it all!! Forget ‘proper’ protocol. This country is in an issues/culture war. During its course why show the enemy any courtesy.

JD thanked McCain in his concession speech. McCain spent millions painting JD as something he wasn’t, even before JD got into the race, the dirt tricks from McCain in this race would have made any democrat proud, I don’t blame JD, he kept it clean while he was royally smeared. Too bad McCain didn’t run for POTUS with the same gusto.

Who gives a rat’s ass if Hayworth called McCain? Hayworth is an irrelevant phony blowhard and the fact that he couldn’t beat McCain will hopefully end his political career forever. Good bye and good riddance.
