For critics of Islam, "sharia" becomes shorthand for extremism
Washington Post ^ | 8/25/10 | Michelle Boorstein

Protesters of the proposed Islamic center near Ground Zero waved signs there this past Sunday with a single word: Sharia.

Their reference to Islam's guiding principles has become a rallying cry for those critical of Islam, who use it to conjure images of public stonings and other extreme forms of punishment in countries such as Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan and argue that those tenets are somehow gaining a foothold in the United States.

Blogs are proliferating with names like Creeping Sharia and Stop Sharia Now. A pamphlet for a "tea party" rally last weekend in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. asked: "Why do Muslims want to take over the world and place us under Shariah law?" Former GOP House speaker Newt Gingrich amplified that point in a much-publicized speech a few weeks ago exploring what he calls "the problem of creeping sharia."

The fact that the word has become akin to a slur in some camps is an alarming development to many religious and political leaders.

"We are deeply saddened by those who denigrate a religion which in so many ways is a religion of compassion," Peg Chemberlin, president of the National Council of Churches, said in a statement earlier this month signed by 40 national religious leaders.

“Sharia” is the combination of church and state. Maybe if we put it that way, she’d understand.

"Sharia in Arabic means "way" or "path."

The only way, in their view.

Yeah. Except for the parts about chopping off limbs, stoning people to death, beheadings, public whippings, canings, female genital mutilation, male ownership of women, children, slavery, war on Christians, Jews, and Hindus... it's full of niceness.

"Boorstein" is a wacko. He lives in another world. Perhaps he might visit Taliban contolled Waziristan, go to the nearest Cazbah, steal a loaf of bread, and then watch his hand get chopped off by a razor sharp sword.

That would change his mind. There is no compassion under sharia law. He is an idiot. Sharia law is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.

Boorstein, who I assume is jewish, is one of the irreversable idiots on our planet. How he can tie down a job even at the WaPo is a mystery to me. Perhaps too much journolist coms are interfering with the cranial processes that most ordinary , non subhumans have.

Come on - if the offense a woman commits isn't too awful, the crowd can use larger stones allowing the killing to be relatively quick... That's compassion. Right? /s

Exactly! Muslim doctrine teaches that Islam is more than just a religion. It teaches that Islam is a social system, a financial system, and a guide for what the structure of the society should be. You put it well — Sharia would incorporate religion directly into our secular laws. It would violate the concept of “separation of church and state”.

Since liberals file lawsuits to tear down crosses off of mountaintops, saying that the mere presence of a cross violates the separation of church and state, certainly they should see that Sharia being directly incorporated into civil law is a far more fundamental violation.
