Murkowski's Third-Party Options Limited and Not Promising
Atlantic ^ | 08/25/10 | Nicole Allen

Shushannah Walshe has a piece at the Daily Beast floating the possibility that, if Lisa Murkowski does indeed lose to Joe Miller, she could run as a third-party candidate. Walshe refers to an unnamed source within the Murkowski campaign who says that they plan to "see whether the option is there or not, but it's a decision she (Murkowski) has to make. There is an option I know of."

Walshe suggests two possibilities: running as a write-in candidate, which would be extremely difficult, expensive, and unlikely; or running on the Alaska Independence Party's ticket. Walshe seems to think Murkowski's campaign is considering the latter, despite the trouble she might have overcoming the party's secessionist bent.

But Gail Fenumiai, director of Alaska's Department of Elections, told me in an email that Murkowski would not be able to run on the AIP's ticket. "There were no US Senate Alaskan Independence Party candidates on the Primary Election," Fenumiai wrote, "so there is no option for them to place someone on the ballot."

Since Murkowski missed the June filing deadline for independent candidates, her main other third-party option, other than running as a write-in, seems to be with the state's Libertarian Party. Fenumiai said that the party could replace its current candidate with Murkowski if it so chooses.

Scot Kohlhaas, chairman of the Alaska Libertarian Party, could not comment on whether they'd be open to putting her on their ballot. Their candidate, David Haase, would have to withdraw voluntarily, and the party would have to make the change by a date in September.

Why are RINOs such sore losers and insist on trying to split the pubbie vote to throw elections to the dems by going third party?

Dunno why the Libertarians would consider a DC beltway politician like Murkowski.

Any AK Libertarians out there?

Wow, what an absolutely intriguing suggestion. Do'y suppose that would be an option for democrat primary losers like Arlen Specter, as well?

Scot Kohlhaas, chairman of the Alaska Libertarian Party, could not comment on whether they'd be open to putting her on their ballot... "I can say this," Kohlhaas said. "She is more pro-choice, and we like that. She voted for amnesty, we like that. There are things about Lisa that we like."

I knew that Libertarians might be sympathetic to pro-abortion stance. I didn't know that they are into amnesty as well.

Because many establishment republicans have more in common with liberals than they do conservatives.

And media pukes know how to play to RINO egos by "floating" the idea of a third party run in the worthless drivel they print.

Because they are establishment candidates that are controled by the same powers that be that control the Democrats. So they need to split the vote in order to prevent the outsider from getting in.

There is also a sense of entitlement among career politicians and political insiders in both parties.

Her best option would be to swallow her pride and offer her complete support to Miller and to Palin.

It would be her finest hour.

But I would expect both of them to be a bit leery.

Once again we find another politician who only cares about power. Party means nothing, principles mean nothing.

Take a hint, lady. You're not wanted.

Bingo! Let’s just hope the results end up leaving that as her only option.

I reckon we’re looking at a recount either way.

The MSM has seen the way to stem Dem losses—gin up a bunch of press and try to convince “moderate” Republicans to run as independents. The MSM is such a tool of the Dems its not funny.

About 7,600 absentee ballots recieved so far with the first counting next Tuesday, Aug. 31. Two more counting days occur on Sept. 3 & 8 for any additional absentee ballots that are received. Then the final number will be known.

If Mill can win approximately 41% of the absentee ballots he will win as I see the numbers at this time. That should be doable with his rise in polling numbers that was occurring at the close of the race.

Murky is just trying to keep from being the second in her family to be taken out by the ‘Cuda. Amazing, though if somehow Miller does lose it will be an indication that Palin’s Alaskan influence is fading (she couldn’t pull a long shot across the finish line against a well funded, entrenched member of the Republican machine). Yeah, right. /s
