APNewsBreak: Hagel backing Pa.'s Sestak for Senate

Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican who has broken ranks in the past with the GOP, gave Democrat Joe Sestak his second major endorsement from moderates in a week in his bid for a hotly contested Senate seat in Pennsylvania.

Hagel told The Associated Press on Monday that Sestak has demonstrated during his two terms in Congress that he puts the interests of the nation and his constituents ahead of his party.

"I think he's exactly what our country needs more of. I think he's what the Senate needs more of _ courageous, independent thinking," Hagel said. "That's what the job is about. You are supposed to use your judgment."

Hagel refused to comment on the candidacy of Sestak's opponent, Republican Pat Toomey, a former congressman.

The men are seeking the seat long held by Sen. Arlen Specter, a Republican-turned-Democrat whom Sestak beat in the primary.

Hmmmmm. Could it be the RAT has pics of Hagel not using his judgment?

As a resident of Pennsylvania, I’m thinking most people here will say, “Chuck Who?”. The only crowd it might appeal to would be veterans and there is a large veteran population in Pa. But I don’t think this has much if any impact. Chuck, I guess your career as an elected or appointed official in the Republican party is now officially over.

From wideawake:

“This will make a huge difference for Sestak.

Chuck Hagel is enormously popular in Pennsylvania.

Every year in State College they host an eleven day festival called “Hagelpallooza” where Hagel fans from all over the state come to listen to Hagel-themed bands, sell Hagel-related paraphernalia and hold well-attended Hagel seminars.”

***********************************************************

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! I live in Pennsylvania and Hagelmania runs rampant in my household. For starters, I own a mug, bobblehead, cookware set, and pillow cases all bearing Chuck Hagel’s likeness. I even have a pound of bacon autographed by the man Chuck Hagel himself, which I keep permanently stored in my freezer.

As a matter fact, my favorite past-time is to dress up like Chuck Hagel for Halloween each year. I swear I get mobbed by thousands of fans on the street begging me for my autograph and it makes me feel like an 80-year-old rock star!

No question about it, this endorsement must come as very, very bad news for the Toomey campaign.

See post #64, where all is explained! :o)

I would only add that Hagel has replaced Hannah in the Perogie races at PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jalapena Hagel is sure to pack the stands with fans for the remaining home games, bolstering the spirits of the struggling Bucs.

Adding insult to injury, Pat Toomey was rejected in his bid to replace Oliver Onion.

Hagel’s first big booster for his 1996 Senate race was one Colin Powell. See how it all fits?
