It's less than a month before Primary Day in New York and GOP conven tion-endorsed gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio is rapidly losing ground to challenger Carl Paladino of Buffalo.
According to the latest Siena College poll, Lazio's 20-point lead over the gadfly businessman, registered a month ago, has shrunk to 13 points, 43-30.
And in recent days Paladino has been endorsed by several upstate GOP county chairmen and such elected officials as Assemblywoman Jane Corwin of Nia-
gara.
Yes, there's a regional element to some of this -- Paladino is something of a hero in the Buffalo area -- but that alone can't explain why Lazio, who's been around New York politics in one form or another for more than 20 years, can scarcely break 40 percent support from his party.
Maybe it's because Paladino talks about issues relevant to people.
On Thursday, for example, he encouraged state workers to help identify blatant examples of waste and those scamming the system.
Lazio is barely saying anything.

Paladino’s has an ad about the victory mosque about 10 times a day. I’ve hardly seen let alone heard Lazio. Paladino seems like he’d be a guy to get things done with no apologies. Paladino reminds me of Chris Christie.
Lazio is just a loser, pure and simple, ever since Hillary steamrolled him. Why the NY GOP continues to run him is beyond me.
Paladino does appear to be more inline with what Conservative or center-right Republicans look for in a candidate; but is he too right to win in NY?
Have New Yorkers finally had enough? Plus, can he grab enough votes across the state to offset Democrat support from NYC and Cuomo’s name recognition?
Paladino does seem rough around the edges, but as with Christie—it may be a time for a full bulls in our government china shops. I don’t actually think the Cuomo coronation will be automatic.
How many pseudo-stars do the suits that run TV, music and movies try to foist on us (based on formulaic stencils).
Same with the political machines. They sit and read polls and think that makes a candidate saleable.
Lazio wouldn’t get 35 percent in a general election.
Lazio is completely unserious. I hope he loses.
Bulls are actually very kind to china shops - check out the Mythbusters episode on that!!! Democrats are far harder on them via taxes and regulations. Bulls, on the other hand, are hard on idiots. Check out Pamplona. Seems to me that running bulls through the government is just what we need. Leave the china intact, but trample and gore all the idiots!
