Jennifer Aniston is in hot water for using a politically incorrect term on Live with Regis & Kelly Thursday morning.
While promoting her flick The Switch, Aniston discussed her recent Barbra Streisand-inspired photo shoot for Harpers Bazaar on the show. "Yeah, I got to play dress up, Jen said to Regis, I do it for a living, like a retard!"
Now, disability advocates are bashing the actress for her word choice.
A rep for the Special Olympics tells Us Weekly, "People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it's hurtful."

OK, so I can call you "retarded" and that is not a problem, but if I say you are a "retard" which is Latin for "slow" then I have insulted all the Retarded people in the world?
Is that the way this politically correct language works?
Thanks for the heads up.
As I have conceded all along there is context, and degrees of harm, therefore judgment is required.
As with all politically correct terminology, if it is used by a conservative it is offensive, but if it is used by a liberal (you know -- a person with a good heart) then it is just cute. Right?
i am not retarded so yes, it would be an abuse of people who truly are but it is not as bad as the other R word. It would reflect on you to some extent depending on context but you obviously don’t care, so be it.
as for the “heads up” remark, i know you are trying to be clever, but i hardly dictate what does and doesnt pass as acceptable language on FR much less anywhere it seems, so maybe it is a consolation to you I have likely heard more revolting language except those of you who have fought in a war.
Why not any F bombs on FR? is JimRob also PC? I mean we’re all adults here, arent we? I had another example in mind but wont go there. The Muslims have a right to beuild a mosque on property they own that is appropriately zoned at GZ. But it will be an abuse that could backfire on them. Go ahead and use the R word publicly as an epithet and proclaim it your right to do and see what you gain. On the whole, i think you are justifiably sensitive about Liberals and MSM language control and I believe you are right about large majority of it. That is not to say though a broken clock cant be right twice a day, OK? that’s my opinion that’s all g2g will check you later
i agree with you on these. blind is perfectly acceptable as is deaf. Cripple is ok too. I see no negative connotation myself in and of itself, BUT it would be wrong to say of a fellow high school football player after a bad game: “he ran as good as the crippled guy in class”
even in the old days, polite people didnt call someone ugly. I believe the word was “plain” or homely. See there has always been PC of some sort because there has always been Politics. we notice it more since the worm has turned and the Libs control it now.
A friend is a sign language interpreter and they told me the deaf do NOT like to be called that...same thing with blind people, they don’t like to be called blind.
It’s all so absurd. What the advocates really want to do is remove the perception that there are differences among us. They want to make us all equal, and make people feel ashamed to see that people ARE blind, deaf, handicapped, etc.
Ed
That's debatable.
You know, 50% of people fall below the IQ of 100. That means that technically half the population is "retarded". So there is a 50/50 chance that you are retarded.
Of course the other 50% are "gifted".
Isn't that the politically correct term for smart asses?
Would that make Mensa folks ‘super jackasses, or super smartasses’?
The word RETARDED has a very clear and specific meaning and applies accurately to mental abilities, engine timing, fire control, and dozens of other things. It's sort of like the word crippled.
If retarded is replaced with "mental disabilities", then inevitability "mental disabilities" will be used to make anyone it applies to feel "outcasted them from schoolmates". A new, more sensitive term will be coined, that isn't as harsh as the "MD word". Then the stupid PC cycle will repeat itself. Negro, black, African American anybody?
Nearly everyone who has ever told me they are a member of "Mensa" has been a retard.
I'll keep that in mind if I ever try to persuade anyone on any issues.
It's not a thing I usually do but hey.. it could happen.
Mostly if folks are retards I don't much care what they think.
all the money in the world doesn’t change the fact that she is a third class actress and Hollyweird relies on sex and nudity for their creativity. Ms.J.A. has done her fair share of nudity to let the world know she is as sexy as the woman her stole her husband.
that’s because they believe in the fantasy of the woman, not the real person she is but then men think more of eye candy then what a woman is inside which is exactly what Hollywood wants people to do. I mean after all sex has taken the place of real creativity, lazy work. There is an epidemic of teenagers who are addicted to porn and think more of sex with themselves and say a J.A. Kim K. Lady GaGa than a real relationship with a normal girl. Too many young men who are addicted to porn now are abusing younger siblings because of the power they can exert over them.
“She will NOT come out of the closet until she can no longer get the cute girlfriend roles.”

She has never been as cute as she is made out to be. She was far from the best looking woman on “Friends”. I can go to any small town and find a better looking girl than Anniston without much trouble.
I hail from a time in American culture when you at least knew you were being offensive.
I mean, gee, I sure like to be aware of it when I am offending people. Any more, the collective culture seems to have skin thinner and more delicate than wet rice paper, while elsewhere people are being beheaded, shot, 'necklaced' and stoned to death.
I'm not in favor of being intentionally offensive without reason, but when possible these thin-skinned pantywaists need to mature past the diaper phase. We can 'make allowances' for the rest.
I have always thought that with a short haircut she would look like a fairly handsome young boy, certainly not a beautiful woman as she has always been billed.
Now what am I going to call it when the ignition timing on my old van won't 'advance' right?
The timing is too "r-worded"?
It's like an arms race, a black (Oops!) market, or the terms "socialist", "liberal", and "progressive"; euphemisms keep getting substituted for good words gone bad, but politically incorrect folks keep catching up.
I believe she was referring to herself, her own actions.
It is the advocates who were offended on behalf of someone else.
Of course, that is their job, to be offended, but the cost is that we cannot use commonplace words to communicate, which is the problem with Political Correctness.
No, I'm not for capricously hurting anyone's feelings, especially those most helpless to defend themselves--that is a mere question of decency, but I'll be damned if I'm going to verbally walk on eggshells because someone who wasn't part of the conversation, nor referred to, nor intended to be included takes offense at a word.
Otherwise, we might as well throw the dictionary in the shredder and just decide to be offended whenever, wherever, and take whatever action we choose. It is already nearly that capricious.
No, you were right the first time. He is a manhole.
It’s an offensive word, meant in an offensive way. Period. People should not use that word. I am offended every single time I hear it. I know people with Down Syndrome and people who are in other ways developmentally disabled. No one should ever dare call my friends “retards.” It’s nasty. You people who use it must know that or you would not use it.
