For the second straight year, the first family has landed on this island of quaint seaside towns, second homes and working farms for a late-summer getaway.
But this year, more so than last, political opponents are trying to hang a question over the visit: Does President Obama deserve a vacation?
The Republican National Committee has taken to calling Obama "the Clark Griswold president," a mocking reference to the Chevy Chase character in National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies. With unemployment claims climbing again, the GOP was hoping its criticism would have a certain national resonance. And maybe it will.
One potential complication: Obama has spent far less time on vacation than his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, had at this point in his presidency.
Veteran CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, a fastidious keeper of presidential statistics, has kept count. By his tally, Obama has embarked on nine "vacations" since taking office, bringing his total days off to 48. Some of those trips lasted a day and some, like his Christmas holiday in Hawaii, more than a week.
By comparison, Bush had visited his ranch in Crawford, Tex., 14 times at this point in his administration and spent 115 days there.

My vacations are more necessary and I'm taking fewer of them than Bush did.
Does President Obama deserve a vacation? You mean this week?
He’s tard. What with all that golfin’ and stuff.
It takes a toll.
Zer0 needs to constantly recharge his itsy-bitsy, teeny-tiny unsustainable batteries.
Not counting Michele traipsing around posh Marbella in designer clothes on the taxpayers' dime.
"Say, Michele. I'm looking at my sinking poll numbers. Uh, about
that vacation house you bought for us on Marbella, the one next
door to the king? The one you bought with the stimulus millions
Rahm stashed offshore for when we exit this crappy WH."
This article reminds me of all the multi-day hosting of foreign leaders that W did out in Texas. Something you don’t see the least bit of with Obama. Allies were important to W, but for Obama our traditional allies are enemies—and our traditional enemies are Obama’s necessarily-stealth allies.
Of course, W was a bit indulgent in moving the operational White House out to Texas for weeks every year. It was an unnecessary provocation of the WH press and a free, mostly-bogus, issue for Democrats to gin up. There are some jobs that you just can’t convert to cushy telecommutes.
Even if true, no comparison. Crawford was a 'southern' White House and his home.
Maybe we should change his title to V-I-C. Vacationer in Chief
Only problem is that is an out and out lie. What they did was ignore all his unofficial vacations and only counted what they call his "official vacation".
exactly-it was his HOME.
and I would like to see them add up O’s golfing hours; I’d also like to see those hours noted during any ‘crisis’ we’ve had-say the oil explosion, unemployment claims going up, Korea, Iraq etc.-ya know-the stuff that happens to the rest of us that he’s supposed to care about.
AND-while we’re at it-let’s just compare working hours-no matter WHERE he is vs Bush’s...oh...and church attendance and how many times he’s said “God” out loud...
The typical daily schedule for POTUS, when he is in the White House, has him banging in the Oval Office at 9 and banging out no later than 3.
Clark Griswold thats pretty funny
“By comparison, Bush had visited his ranch in Crawford, Tex., 14 times at this point in his administration and spent 115 days there.”
W vacation...AKA...going home!
Liberals are such liars.
He can say he is “taking vacations” in place of the poor who can’t afford them. That way he can understand what the poor, who are his biggest backers, are missing.
Gee who’d complain if Obama stayed on vacation for the rest of his term?
Yeah.....THAT house....
It is so glaringly obvious, isn't it? I honestly do not recall Bush taking a SINGLE vacation like Obama. I remember him fishing at his father's place in Kennebunkport, but that is it.
Obama is what they call the newly rich. Can’t remember the French word for it. Getting old.
A better question is does he deserve six, especially since he never seems to do any work. Speeches, fundraisers, WH galas... date nights, golf, basketball... Whoever said "I need a vacation to recover from my vacation" must have had Obama in mind.
