The ancient world was painted gaudy colors and probably more resembled this:
than anything we see in movies or textbooks.
The jokers over at Cracked.com talked about this recently, and I liked how they put it: "Ancient Greece looked more like someone crashed their LGBT pride parade into a Mardi Gras Festival."
Heck, this was true in the Middle Ages in Europe, too. The uncolored stone statues you see around the doorways to medieaval churches were actually painted in very vivid colors, and there was often painting on the walls, too. You can actually still see faint staining on the stone on some of them.
