MARTINSBURG - An "open-carry luncheon" will be held at Sissy's Family Restaurant Saturday, the first event of its kind to be hosted locally by the West Virginia Citizens Defense League Inc.
According to the group's Eastern Panhandle representative, Art Thomm, the CDL is a nonprofit grassroots organization that works at the state level to support legislation that protects the right to keep and bear arms, as protected by both the state constitution and the Second Amendment of the United Sates Constitution.
Thomm, who has been involved with the CDL for a year, said he attended a CDL open-carry luncheon in Charleston within the last year, and he wanted to introduce the type of event locally.
"I think that the Eastern Panhandle doesn't always have a strong of a voice in Charleston, and I want residents here who support the Second Amendment to be able to voice their opinions. And that's what this luncheon is for," he said.
The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the restaurant, and families are welcome.
"The event is open carry and/or concealed carry with permit, although no carry is fine, too," Thomm said. "Absolutely no 'show and tell' will be tolerated, and all firearms must remain holstered or you will be asked to leave."
The event also will be an opportunity for people to learn more about the CDL, as well as become a member of the group if they choose to do so.
Thomm said discussion regarding the Second Amendment will be led by local candidates, community leaders and other officials.
"I want everyone in support of this cause to come out and talk about how we can take a stand to protect our rights to defend ourselves if need be," he said. "This issue has always been one where there is little to no 'middle ground.' People are usually very much for or very much against the Second Amendment."
Those who would like to become a member of the West Virginia CDL may sign up at the event.
A new membership fee is $25, and all who sign up will receive a free T-shirt.
Thomm said all proceeds raised from membership fees will go directly to supporting the program.

Watching results over several decades, It is clear that the ratio is about 5 Constitutional supporters to 1 anti-freedom type.
It is a measure of the power of the MSM that we have had as many infringements on the Second Amendment as we have had for past decades. Fortunately, we now have the Internet and freerepublic. Just a small amount of freedom of the press does a great deal.
Yesterday, was in a Starbucks in VA Beach, VA and behind two guys who were open carrying a 45 each. They were pretty obviously “security” types though not in a uniform. All the Starbucks workers knew them pretty well.
After the initial surprise, I felt safer, better and glad to be a Virginian! Sic Semper Tyrannus!
