Indeed it is!
So I take it you’re Italian (the pizza reference, citing a Mayfield restaurant, etc.).
I’m Polish / Slovenian.
My wife and I are both into the history of various dishes. It’s also interesting to notice how many different cultures came up with similar things.
Example: Polish Pierogis, Italian Ravioli, Chinese Pot Stickers, Irish / Scandinhavian Pasties, etc...
Every where you go, somebody got the idea of making a dough and wrapping it around food.
Sausages too! Everybody has their own subtle take on them.
Viva La Difference!
I’ve read that, too.
I think it’s important that we don’t just assign sterotypes to people without understanding that there are very sensible historical reasons for why people did things.
People of other backgrounds will chime in on their “own” foods as well. And that’s good stuff. It’s interesting!
I’m full blooded Italian!
Going home to Cleveland is for me like going to Paris. And no, I’m not kidding. If I could figure out how to lift up the entire town (plus the lake) here to St. George, UT (no winter), I would do it. TOMORROW.
The grass always looks greener on the other side.
Here I am in snow-less St. George. But there are not enough ethnic people here, other than Mexicans. And I can’t eat Mexican food. The only pierogis I get are in the frozen food department. I went all over for ravioli. Forget the other stuff you mentioned. Which reminds me, I have to post some Swedish recipes here on freepers from my ex-inlaws.
There are no mom & pop restaurant/bars here, which are legion in the midwest. We have ice shaving places, and national chains like Appleby’s, Olive Garden, Chili’s, etc.
I can’t wait to come back home. I’ve already organized my packing to give me one empty suitcase to fill on my way back.
Go Cleveland!
At least you have the Grand Canyon!
But if French fries are cheaper than potatoes...
Just between you guys and me:
If Ohio ever could figure out its tax and oppressive utilities, making them manageable, I’d move right back. I could even deal with that whole winter thing.
I hate it when people ‘dis’ Cleveland. It’s a great town, great people. One thing most people don’t realize is that NE Ohio is a beautiful community. I wish they had better politicians.
We deserve better.
Thanks. Never saw it before! How do I join? Or just search and show up?
Btw, there are still limitations on the kinds of things that can be purchased with food stamps. That includes prepackaged foods.
You can look it up.
A garden has start up costs, but over the long term, you will save money. And yes, it requires work, as if that’s a bad thing.
” And yes, it requires work, as if thats a bad thing. “
I didn’t say that it wasn’t an enjoyable and rewarding experience (until the Havelinas - local wild pigs - got in last week and wiped everything out) - I was taking issue with the silly notion that “Home Grown” food is “free”.....
This is discriminating to favor a limited number of people, who are not intelligent enough to shop correctly already. What about the rest of us, we sure could use a discount on food products too. I am tired of my small living pittance being divided up and redistributed to others who have not worked for it. I worked hard to live small and happy. This administration wants me to live smaller and sadder while they vacation.
First we all know that frozen vegetables often have more nutrients than the so called fresh fruits and veggies which are transported from long distances and often picked while still green. Not to mention all the pesticides and wax etc they are sprayed with to help them survive the trip.
A small frozen bag of carrots for example is 99 cents (cheaper if you watch the sales). This cost is 19.8
cents per serving. A serving of generic tomato soup costs about 20 cents on discount days.
That bag of carrots can be used to prepare a wonderful creamy carrot soup, and it doesn't even take more than 2 minutes more. But in does take a little brain effort, and a 30 second whirl in the blender.
I heard a guy on Oprah touting the need to subsidize fresh fruits and veggies. His example was if a mother of 2 kids had just a dollar to spend, there was nothing she could buy that cheap that would fill her children up, so she just gets the 2 burger for a dollar special at McDonalds.
Well that is protein and starch right? How about taking that dollar and buying 2 cans of pork and beans? It would be almost as easy - just open the cans and hand them each a spoon. There is 3.5 servings per can, so she would have 3 meals instead of 1 for her children.
Course if she was willing to put in a little effort, she could prepare a balanced meal costing 50 cents per child. A serving of pinto beans, corn bread, milk, and spinach, or chicken, milk, peas & carrots, 1 slice of wheat bread for example.
If they plant a little lettuce, chives, spinach etc in the yard or a container, they can have plenty of fresh greens for very little.
Furthermore, taking this example and extending it. If she gets 1 dollar per meal for her kids 3 meals per day for 1 week works out to be $21.00 per week. I have personally fed 2 adults and 1 child on $18.00 per week(nutritionally balanced).
A single mom with 1 child on unemployment qualifies for at least $46.00 in food stamps, which also covers “fresh” fruits and veggies. So I'll just say to this propaganda: That dog don't hunt!
My wife decided we should get chickens this year and get "free" eggs. So I built a nice big chicken coop and chicken run. We got the peeps and have raised them to mature birds now. Just this week we got our first 4 eggs. Not counting all my labor, just the expenses for materials, I'd say those eggs are worth at least $300 a piece.
Homemade kielbasa, czarnina and kiska. All things I grew up with in Chicago. All my grandparents were from Poland/Prussia.
Not to mention Gawumpki (sp?)!
