Dan Rostenkowski Remembered at Funeral (FIRE WALTER JACOBSON PLEASE!!!)

Chicago - He was a political giant who rubbed elbows with presidents, prime ministers and CEOs from around the world, but Dan Rostenkowski was happiest spending time with family and friends from the old neighborhood on the city's Northwest Side.

Tuesday, old Rosty, as he was known, was laid to rest. His funeral mass was at the Catholic church he called his own for his whole life, Saint Stanislaus Kostka.

He died last week of lung cancer at the age of 82.

Rostenkowski was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1959. He was considered Mayor Richard J. Daley's point man in Washington.

A brief editorial from me. Walter Jacobson attacked my grandfather who was mayor of my city for 35 years as an independent and made the city grow from 5000 to 50,000. This piece of trash accused my grandfather who was a God fearing man who went to church EVERY Sunday of being corrupt!!!

It is fitting that Rostenkowslki was honored by the entire Chicago Democratic Establishment, including Mayor Daley, who choked up while delivering a eulogy. Rostenkowski was a common thief, who lined his own pockets at our expense. Nothing—office furniture, postage stamps—was too insignificant to escape his greedy grasp. He hired “ghost” payrollers for his congressional staff—no show relatives and friends whom WE paid to do nothing. The entire Daley crime family showed up to sing his praises, lying even on the day of his internment: Daley praised Rosty’s allegiance to his gritty Northwest side neighborhood, a place he in fact abandoned upon his release from jail. He died in sylvan Wisconsin, returning to Chicago only to be buried . The denoument of the Blago trial and Rosty’s funeral coincided: proof, if such were nedded, that “plus ca change.....”.

Dengar, just to keep you on the path to a heart attack, let me relate a skippy-Rosty moment from history.

Back in 73-74 I was co-chair of the citywide Alinsky Arson coalition. We had 2 memorable meetings covered by skippy and Bill Kurtis, both of CH2 at the time. One event was pure weeknight protest. The other was a Legislative insurance committee hearing with Bernie Epton, Wm Kempiner, and all Republicans opposed arson. Harold Washington was the only Dem on the committee opposed to arson.

Skippy made sure the protest and TV coverage didn’t blame Rosty for the 107 arsons on 2 blocks in Rosty’s 32d ward. Skippy wanted to just blame Ald. Tom Keane (the EdBurke of that time) and his business partners (One of whom was a Dem from Rogers Park on the legislative insurance committee.)

Kurtis, however, was intent on shifting the focus away from all politicians and blaming the gangs for the arsons, despite the fact that just one of the 107 fires was started by a freelancing gang member paid by Tom Keane’s business partner Ganzer.

Skippy lost; Kurtis won. Actually the producer from 60-minutes won. He totally controlled skippy, Kurtis and the entire story ... and in the end, our Alinsky organizers.

They filmed a gang member (not an arsonist but he talked “more like a gang member”) in front of a blank wall. Then they edited a graffitti wall of a different gang behind him. On TV appearing to be in front of the wrong gang’s grafitti caused a big stir in the community that came to me to explain away.

So CH2 didn’t blame the politicians at all despite the fact that we had ironclad proof that Ald. Tom Keane, Isadore Ganzer, banker Weinberg, Ald Wigoda were all guilty.
