Sharif El-Gamal is the developer behind the plan to erect an Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site.
Calls are mounting for him and the other backers to find a new home for their center, further away from the site of the September 11th terrorist attacks, but El-Gamal isn't budging.
He is sticking with his plans to erect a 13-story center and prayer space in Lower Manhattan. He likens the project to a YMCA or Jewish Community Center, with programs open to all residents of all faiths.
"A landmark, an iconic building that will have people come and visit it from around the world,” said El-Gamal as to what he imagines. “This looks like it is going to be the most famous community center in the world."

"Park51 is a community center. It is two blocks north of the World Trade Center site,” said El-Gamal. “In New York City, two blocks is a great distance. There are some buildings in New York that have their own zip codes. There is such a scarcity of space in New York, especially in Lower Manhattan. Keep in mind this is a small island, so we are nowhere near the World Trade Center site."

Of course, the project got a boost from the White House last weekend when President Barack Obama spoke strongly in support of the developer's right to build the center. El-Gamal says he heard the president's remarks while he was on his way to East Hampton. He says he was blown away.

Oh, it's intended to be seen by all kinds of people. This is a leftist project, as much as a muslim project. Funny how the press talks about the Imam but not about his partner. The islamophobic types overlook the progressive left's ivlvement too in their haste to freak out. Look at one of the mosque foundation cofounders- a former Mayor of Aspen Colorado. Near as I can tell he might be a new ager granola crunching lib , not a radical muslim.
When the leftists couldn't get their historic revisionist museum "International Freedom Center" [dedicated to bashing the US for its failings and evil against minorities, etc] started at ground zero back in 2004-5 , the left apparently opted to take this tack and sneak it in via a westernized Sufi islam "multicultural center" instead, knowing that political correctness and religious tolerance would effectively silence opposition to it.
Recall all the western liberals/progresives on board that Gaza strip flotilla boat with the Turkish IHH terrorists that the Israelis boarded? they seem to be related. Recall that one of them was a gal from Code Pink, campaign donation bundler for Obama? I think this Gaza bunch met , along with palestinian activists/Hamas supporters, in a local Christian church in NY before the Gaza flotilla business.
Anyway, the ever present George Soros's Aspen Foundation [which may or may not still be headed by the chairman and CEO of CNN, Waler Isaacson] was involved in the failed 9/11 memorial project called "International Freedom Center" at ground Zero as well as this Cordoba Foundation and the Imam's group ASMA.
The Taliban would be easier to deal with that this weird mix of frootloops.
A lot of people forget how it was the construction workers who took over search and recovery after Giuliani ordered NYPD and FDNY back to their regular jobs. As the clean up progressed they sifted meticulously for fragments of human remains. One time when I went down there, I saw some of them up close, and I was struck by a feeling that they felt very *protective* of the site. Some are ill now, by all the junk they breathed in during the early days.
Some have said on that website that they've been out of work, but they rather starve than participate in building the mosque. Believe them. These construction guys are among the staunchest of patriots.
This imam hangs around & gives unicorn-and-pixie dust talks to local liberal jewish groups all the time and they apparently gobble it up.
He’s also an associate of an Iranian official who’s made appearances in NY at the UN and in Malaysia where the imam’s other office is.

Sick....he wants to celebrate Islam in the same place that it killed 3000 people and wants to establish an icon.
