Operation Paperclip allowed the US to pick up the cream of German minds after the war. Werner Von Braun is arguably the key man responsible in helping the US beat the Russians to the moon. He was a major or colonel in the SS, not that he had a choice he thought he could make in the matter.
Von Braun’s boss at Pennemunde put the screws to him to join the SS, and then didn’t join himself. It was a Nazi that got us to the moon.
