The whole point of Caan’s rant was that Hollywood actors shouldn’t speak on politics. Then he was asked a political question. He refused to comment. I think it shows his consistency.

James Caan informed the Hollywood crowd that he is ultra-conservative and states Im not a God damn Hollywood liberal, Im not. Always liked James Caan ... my respect for him just went up several notches.

Hi, mylife:
The opening scene of Thief sold me on Michael Mann being a great director. From the rainy night, Tangerine Dream infused, noir opening scene. Through the tech and drilling of the safe and inside the guts punching of of the lock (A shot that had never been attempted before) I knew I wasn't in Kansas anymore!
Though the film does lag in spots, especially those with Willy Nelson. I see Thief very much the same way I see Sam Peckinpah's Major Dundee. Both are energetic and imaginative projects directed to the best of their respective abilities. Revealing glimpses of greater things to come. Specifically Heat and The Wild Bunch .
As for re-using scenes from previous projects. If you pay close attention during the opening moments of Mann's television pilot for Crime Story. You can see segments of the infamous burning a door with a diamond vault's door scene from Thief being used to excellent effect.
Jack.

BTW, when I was young I was a welder and used to fill back in the metal that was drilled out on safes that had been cracked.
I made careful notes on the location and depth of the hole for each model of safe.
One day I wondered to myself what I was going to do with that information and I promptly burned the book.
I bet there were 75 safe models listed in that little book.

And now the Hollywood Mafia will target him like Barzini targeted Sonny Corleone.
