Say what you may about Lenny Bruce's "potty mouth" humor, but he might have been right about one thing. When Dustin Hoffman portrayed him in the movie Lenny back in 1976(?) he re-created one of his routines in front of a mixed audience where he starts by asking, "Are there any n*****s here?" He repeats the word quite a few times angering the Black people while the Whites look on in shock. He then asks if there are any "Jewb*ys", "w*ps", sp*cs", "ch*nks" etc. By the end of the routine he's hurling out just about every known epithet and the audience soon understands what he's doing and laugh hysterically. His point was to just stop being offended by these stupid words and they will lose their impact and those who do use them will expose themselves for the idiots they are.

The ridiculous fear of the word nigger is an embarassment in a supposedly civilized world. Saying “n-word” doesn’t magically mean the reader/listener doesn’t actually understand the actual word is what’s being mentioned.

I work with black and Hispanic teenagers who use the word constantly with each other. But adults can’t even say the word in a discussion OF the word.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think the F word is much worse than “nigger”, depending on the context. Frankly, I learned over two decades ago that the word is not necessarily about race. I’ve come across “niggers” that are also white “crackers”.

And don’t even get me started on “niggardly”. It is a favorite word of Tom Clancy’s.

Words have meaning. I will not let the ignorant silence me. Especially in a country with our first amendment.
