McCain says he doesn't back 14th Amendment change

PHOENIX (AP) -- Sen. John McCain says he does not support changing the Constitution to end automatic citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants.

The Republican Arizona senator told The Associated Press that despite the current flurry of news stories on the topic and a statement he made last week that was widely interpreted as saying he supported hearings on the matter, he remains unconvinced that such a change is needed.

The man who wrote the fourteenth’s citizenship clause, Sen. Jacob Howard of Michigan:

“This amendment which I have offered [citizenship clause to the fourteenth amendment] is simply declaratory of what I regard as the law of the land already, that every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States.****** This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens,*********** who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country.”[10]

There’s no problem with the Fourteenth Amendment whatsoever.

There’s no need to amend the Fourteenth Amendment whatsoever.

The problem is with elected officials like John McCain, who won’t follow it, or force judges to follow it.

The Amendment does not allow for anchor babies, as most FReepers can easily prove by simply quoting the framers of it verbatim.

But even more importantly, the Amendment DOES protect ALL innocent persons from being killed, and requires the States to protect them and to provide for the equal protection of the laws for EVERY PERSON.

McCain, and the Pauls, and Palin, and Romney, and Huckabee, and most Republican leaders these days ignore that explicit requirement and claim that the states can allow abortion if they want to. They’re pro-choice for States, they’re anti-Fourteenth Amendment, and they’re one hundred and eighty degrees out of phase with their own party’s Reagan pro-life plank.
