National Council of La Raza calls for end to the 287(g) program
NCLR ^ | August 13, 2010

Posted on 08/13/2010 9:01:30 AM PDT by La Lydia

A report released today by NCLR (National Council of La Raza)...concludes that the 287(g) program is far from the smart immigration enforcement that our country needs. The program was intended to make America safer...but in effect it provides unchecked authority to local law enforcement, entangles the broader immigrant and Latino communities by leading to the arrest of mostly nonviolent and nonthreatening immigrants, and exacerbates racial and ethnic targeting of Hispanics at the local level. The Impact of Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act on the Latino Community reveals that the program remains in place despite growing evidence that it undermines public safety, lacks accountability, and weakens communication between police and Latinos.

“As this report shows, the 287(g) program provides compelling evidence that current concerns with Arizona SB 1070—which is strongly opposed by the national civil rights community—are based on experiences with similar, poorly conceived and badly implemented enforcement strategies,” said Eric Rodriguez, Vice President of NCLR’s Office of Research, Advocacy, and Legislation. “There has been minimal attention paid to state-level enforcement programs such as 287(g) that are carrying out federal immigration enforcement, often in very ineffective ways.”

Enacted in 1996, the federal law known as section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act has grown to include more than 70 local police jurisdictions that have signed agreements with the federal government to deputize local officials to enforce federal immigration law.

Among the report’s findings are:

Most of the agreements (61%) are in southern states, which have experienced a rapid growth in new immigrant populations. Although the program was enacted in 1996, it was reframed and expanded as an anti-terrorism tool following September 11, 2001. The agreements are often signed in response to a perceived increase in crime, but the signing typically correlates more to an increase in the immigrant population than it does to high or growing crime rates....

Recommendations in the report include:

The 287(g) program should be terminated...Congress and the president must work to overhaul the immigration system...

Could it be that the two go hand in hand?

With the proviso that when they use the word “immigrant”, they really mean “illegal immigrant”.

La Raza is the voice of "La Reconquista." Just the right people to advise the US on "smart immigration enforcement."

Okay, so now we do away with what little control we have on immigration? Just open up the border and let any and all roam freely in the US....Sure,

While we’re at it let’s make drugs, kidnapping and murder legal, too. That should lessen the load of the feds so we can send more Muslim preachers overseas to build more mosques.

How about calling for the end to La Raza, instead?

According to La Raza, there are no illegal immigrants. Only immigrants. And only immigrants of a Spanish-speaking persuasion. They do not distinguish between US citizens and others. They do not recognize US sovereignty.

I consider La Raza to be as corrupt as those groups that finance terrorism. I will dedicate my time to boycotting all these corporations who support La Raza. But, better yet, we need to pressure our legislators about even listening to this racist group. They will never favor the American citizens. They make me sick.

287(g), deputizes local authorities as federal immigration agents so they can help Immigration and Customs Enforcement capture illegal immigrants who threaten the community or national security. They are trained by ICE and can feed people who are arrested straight into federal custody.

See Prince William County, VA.

Aztlan is a fantasy. The ONLY people that can say they were in AZ first are the Native Americans that were already on this side of the border. The descendants of the very few Mexican citizens that were in AZ 150 years and did not choose to go over the border back into Mexico at any point in the last 150 years can cliam they were here first. The ones that stayed in Mexico have NO claim. Any illegals sneaking in now have ZERO claim. The United States won it 150 years ago. Mexico had AZ for only about 25 years and there were only around 10,000 in the SW when we won the war. The United States (Los Estados Unidos)was very generous when we won against Mexico. Mexico started the war. We won and couldve taken the entire country fair and square as the spoils of war. I propose the Reconquisadoracion of Mexico. We charge Mexico for the land that they have now. Sell all their valuable assets, as the Soviet Union did when they plundered Eastern Europe, charge Mexico for ALL the social services that we have squandered on illegal aliens including hospital visits. Charge Mexico for all the lost wages and unemployment paid to real Americans over the decades because the illegals took their jobs and made everyone's pay in the Estados Unidos lower by having a much too large pool of labor. Put all the illegal aliens into Belize and Guatemala because it is a very small border to protect and pay those countries a few billion dollars out of what we make on the sale of the assets of Mexico to take every citizen of Mexico into their country since legally ALL of Mexico should, by rights, belong to the USA.
