(CNN) -- Former Illinois Congressman Dan Rostenkowski, who rose through the ranks of Chicago's rough-and-tumble political scene to become one of the most powerful men on Capitol Hill, has died, according to the office of Chicago Alderman Richard Mell.

Rostenkowski set the lowest standard possible for your typical Democrat when he was caught with a basement full of furniture from the Capitol building.
I remember watching Rottenkowski fleeing for his life from a mob of angry senior citizens after he voted for Hillarycare. Now that was some quality television.
hope he picked up his asbestos suit from the cleaners.
Didn’t he also use tons of taxpayer stamps for personal use?
Stealing stamps is par for the course ~ for Congress critters. The furniture was a winner!
The issue with the House Post Office was much more complex than postage.
Under Dan and the House Dems control the House Post Office was kind of a no interest loan counter. They used it to Kite checks from congressmen. A Congress member would go in there and write check for $10,000 and be assured it wouldn’t even begin to approach the bank for a week or two and if returned would sit for a couple of months before anyone brought it up.
There was a long list of such misuse of public money and trust that ended up putting ol’ Dan in an Orange Suit.
It would be interesting to compare the write-ups for Rostenkowski and for Ted Stevens. How prominent is the dirt in each? I expect that the MSM would portray Rostenkowski as a Titan who — oh, by the way — had some ethical lapses, while Stevens would be portrayed as a corrupt felon who — oh, by the way — happened to serve some time in Congress.
“The TV news ran footage of Rostenkowski fleeing from his constituents. Rostenkowski reportedly asked his press secretary whether the issue would go away in a few days, and was told Let me put it this way Congressman. When you die, they will play this clip on television.”
Pretty much.
Was it Rostey who left Reagan holding the bag on TEFRA? Reagans deal that would allow a tax increase in return for a reduction in spending? For every dollar of tax increase they were to cut 1.83 in spending. They raised the taxes (and then blamed Reagan and never cut spending)
Typical Chicago rat. Good riddance.
