Cold, San Francisco? Probably Because You Have No Insulation
By Joe Eskenazi

No insulation in Mr. Freeze's lair either To folks living in actual cold-weather communities, San Franciscans' complaints about our recent chilly spell have something of a Marie Antoinette-level naivete.
Face it, San Francisco: The coldest day out-of-doors here isn't that cold. Period. That being said, you may very well be shivering indoors here, because, under state law, San Francisco apartments need not have any insulation whatsoever.
**SNIP**
The laws are not the same for those residing in homes and apartment-dwellers, notes Ed Sweeney, the Department of Building Inspection's deputy director for inspection. State law mandates that those selling a single-family or two-unit home have to go through an energy compliance process -- "You have to have your doors and windows weatherproofed, insulate all the pipes, and do R-30s on the roofs, R-19 or the equivalent on the ceiling, and R-12 on the walls," says Sweeney (The specs he quoted above refer to the thickness of the fiberglass insulation required by law).
And yet, San Francisco apartments of three units or more -- which house the vast majority of this city's residents -- don't have any such laws mandating proper insulation.

Notice the tenants aren’t insisting on this when looking to rent.
boo freakin’ hoo. Suck it up pansies!
Try snow in October and freezing yo ass off for 7 months of the year!...
THEN you can whine for about ten seconds and get away with it
Hell freezing over????
Isn’t it always 60 degrees in San Fransisco?
God is on His throne laughing while these puny people preach their “global warming” garbage. Next up in the arsenal of bad karma: an ice storm!!
It was 52 degrees last night coming out of the SF airport last night at 10 PM — 3 degrees away from the 40s! Brrr.
California has some strange temperatures along the coast. When I booked my April trip to San Diego, I never considered that it would be much warmer back home in Minnesota while I was there.
Isn’t it always freezing cold in San Francisco in the summer?
Purportedly Mark Twain wrote he had never seen a colder winter than summer in San Francisco.
I live on the San Francisco Peninsula a few miles south of the city. It's slightly above 55 right now. All day long my roof has been soaking up the sun and it's now penetrated to the house, so indoors it's 72. If I followed code when I renovated I'd have to have a heater on somewhere.
OTOH, I'm in short sleeves and sleep with the windows open.
One thing I always noticed about SF, was that every place always left their doors open and there was nothing to sit on that wasn’t the outside temperature.
Going into restaurants and sitting down in cold chairs, touching everything cold meant that there never seemed to be a chance to warm up and relax completely. It was like being at a ski resort.
And nobody heats their house because “almost 60 degrees out!”.
Well the climate does change very often: its called the WEATHER and SEASONS!!
I said to someone recently that there are several occupations whereby you can be either 1) being so inept and your forecasting is totally wrong or 2) lying in your forecasting so as to serve your own political agenda or 3) both of the former and never be in fear of losing your job!!
Those jobs includes POLITICIANS, ECONOMISTS, WEATHERMEN, ENVIRONMENTALISTS and PSYCHICS and any other jobs which includes forecasting for the future.
Yes. Actually, it's the same year-round. Not quite freezing, but uncomfortably cold in summer. Nobody has air conditioning, not needed.
I was at SF Int'l Airport early this morning, low 50s. Always amusing seeing arriving tourists freak out at the cool weather. Especially those wearing shorts.
Mark Twain was right. I lived in San Francisco for twelve years, escaping 3 years ago with some of my brain and soul still intact.
I lived near the coast & Golden Gate Park.
During the 3 months of winter, I was buried in cold wet fog.
During the 3 months of summer, I was buried in cold wet fog.
I hate cold wet fog.
Hey, SF how is that global warming thing going for ya.
