Former Republican U.S. Senator Ted Stevens was aboard a plane that crashed in Alaska, and it was not immediately clear whether he survived, a congressional source said on Tuesday. Half of those aboard the plane were killed in the crash and a doctor is apparently on the scene, though rescuers are having trouble reaching the site because of bad weather, the source said, declining to be further identified. Stevens lost his re-election bid in 2008 after he was convicted on corruption charges, but the case was later thrown out because of prosecutorial misconduct.

From the AP story:

“Stevens, a moderate Republican...”

WTF? Are Democrats ever described with qualifiers?

Early 40’s, commercial flights weren’t as safe as today.
He was a young scientist working on the Manhatten Project, flying several time a week.
I worked w him on West Coast Shuttle at VAFB, CA. in the early 80’s.

The former head of NASA,Sean O’Keefe was also a passenger.

Ironic that O'Keefe was the NASA Administrator who cancelled the final shuttle servicing mission to Hubble (it was later reinstated by his successor) following the loss of Columbia because he considered the mission too risky.

But flying in AK is not for the faint of heart.

I once took a small plane ride (6-seater) around Mt. Denali (McKinnley). It was overcast on the ground, but windy and snowy by the peak. Otherwise, it was 737's from Deadhorse to Anchorage.

I doubt I'd do the sightseeing plane again...

“I think that was Congressman Don Young in whose district the bridge to nowhere was to be built, who got that earmark.”

Don Young’s district is the entire state of Alaska.

Apparently he had a premonition he would die in a plane crash before his first crash in 1978.

Crazy.

Sure, Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, you’re cool.

Those little puddle jumpers are where the fun is. And that place is BIG. Air travel is the only way.

What are the odds that a husband and wife both die in a plane crash decades apart?

RIP Mr. Stevens
