A Welfare Check and a Voting Card
New York Times ^ | August 10, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 08/10/2010 6:35:36 AM PDT by La Lydia

After years of deliberate neglect, the Justice Department is finally beginning to enforce the federal law requiring states to provide voter registration at welfare and food stamp offices. The effort not only promises to bring hundreds of thousands..;The National Voter Registration Act of 1993, better known as the motor-voter law, is well known for making it possible to register to vote at state motor vehicle offices...the law also required states to allow registration at offices that administer food stamps, welfare, Medicaid, disability assistance and child health programs...But registration at public assistance offices proved far less popular.

...in many states, Republican officials did not want to provide easy entry to the voting rolls for low-income people whom they considered more likely to vote Democratic. The Bush administration devoted its attention to seeking out tiny examples of voter fraud and purging people from the rolls in swing states...

In April, however, President Obama’s Justice Department sent the states a set of guidelines making it clear that it expected full compliance with the public-assistance office section of the law — making it clear that people applying for benefits must not only be offered the chance to register but must be given help in filling out the forms if they ask. If states do not comply voluntarily, lawsuits are likely to follow.

...government offices are much more likely to provide reliable registrations than Acorn or other advocacy groups that were widely accused of fraudulent sign-ups in the last cycle....

But the best reason to applaud the Justice Department’s new posture is that it will bring more voters into public life...Nationwide enforcement by the Justice Department could add millions more. The more people who have access to the ballot, the better the country will be.

Scrounging up more Obama voters with your tax dollars. I guess registering illegal aliens wasn't enough for them.

Disgusting. It should be illegal for anyone who on any form of welfare or who is not a net taxpayer to be voting under any circumstances.

Great law. Encourage the the stupid, the lazy and the ignorant to vote.

I completely agree. You should have to pay at least $1 in net tax to the jurisdiction you presume to vote for. No skin in the game, no right to have a say in how it’s run. I guess the only problem is what to do with gov’t employees: after all, they receive all their pay from the gov’t and therefore don’t pay $1 net in tax to any Federal jurisdiction.

So, my idea will never happen. Oh, well.

IIRC, the "auto-fraudo" law also forbade the agency from asking for citizenship documentation before offering to register the person to vote.

I guess democrats can no longer count on dead voters.

The dems have gotten drunk on being back in power and they aren’t taking any chances on losing it again.

In many states, Republican officials did not want to provide easy entry to the voting rolls for people who were ineligible to vote, or people who were already dead, or people who wanted to register multiple times.

...bring back the literacy tests and poll tax...now before you flame me as racist for saying this, let me say that I’ve done both...and btw, the ‘racist’ poll tax was only $2.00 and it was good for two years...whites, as well as blacks had to pay it....if you’re too sorry to pay it, then you don’t get to vote...to put it into perspective $2.00 was about the same cost as a 6-pack and a pack of cigarettes....and the poor folks that said it discriminated against them always seemed to find money for beer and smokes.

Because things like voter registration should be so much easier for those who don’t work and have all day to do things. Uh huh, sure.

Anyone on Gov assistance should not be allowed to vote, or if you do not own property.

In arguing this with a leftist, I was astounded when they claimed they DO “have skin in the game”, and should be able to vote,

because their livelihood could be taken away if they can’t vote to continue welfare payments.

Entitlement mentality.

The conservatives should be pushing a movement to have Employers provide easy access for voter registration. Be surprised how many working citizens don't vote.

The 24th amendment only disallows the denial of voting privileges if someone does not pay a tax. My suggestion doesn’t deny voting privileges because these people did not pay any tax, it denies voting because they are on welfare, or because they are not assessed any tax that they must pay. In the latter scenario, these people did not fail to pay any tax because they were not assessed any tax.
