That's Government Motors gratitude for you! From the Wall Street Journal:

U.S. automobile giant General Motors Co. said Tuesday it plans to invest close to $500 million in its Ramos Arizpe plant in northern Mexico to produce a new line of engines as well as a new vehicle...

"We estimate that these technologies allow for a 9% improvement in fuel efficiency from current engines," Lieblein said, adding that the investment will directly create 390 jobs in Coahuila state, where Ramos Arizpe is located.

Another $215 million will go toward upgrading the factory's production lines to build a new vehicle for the domestic and international markets, she said, noting that the investment will be key to maintaining 400 jobs.

Assembly of the vehicle, which wasn't named, is set to begin in the last quarter of 2011. GM plans for it to "give long-term viability to this plant by gradually substituting some production volumes."

Lieblein said General Motors has invested $4.1 billion in Mexico over the last four years.

US taxpayers bailed out GM, next came the Volt, and now this is the payback.

On the bright side, at least there may be fewer Mexicans crossing the border.

Yeah OK. Seems like Mexico gets the good skilled factory work and we get the Mexicans that don't have the skills to work in those factories. It's a Win/Lose deal (guess who loses) courtesy of Hussain and his merry band of America hating Marxists.

I fail to see where there should be any surprise at this news. Ever since the America-Hater In Chief and his Union Mob unconstitutionally took over GM, it’s been going into the crapper.

I hate to say this, as I am a life long GM guy. No longer, though.

Oh see now all the paid off union auto workers should be happy. Now GM can use this new Mexico Plant to make cars people actually want to buy so as to get enough cash to pay for the Union Workers to make “Volts” in the USA for the Government pipe dream.

I wonder if the UAW has chapters in Mexico? If so, no harm, no foul. /s/

got nothing to do with gratitude by survival. With the high taxes, regulations, and unions in US. Manufacturing jobs can not survive, so they move offshore

Lots of automakers investing or expanding in Mexico. First they made parts there and now the assembly is done there also. Ship then north to the Americans I guess is the new fad.

I’m pretty sure the writer meant that tongue-in-cheek with a big fat </SARC> after it.

I’ve despised the inept management, Microsoft-like engineering, and unbelievably shoddy construction of GM vehicles for years. When they were going bankrupt, I knew that capitalist system would efficiently rid the system of inept MBAs and managers, greatly reduce the effect of the toy story UAW, and perhaps start making good cars again.

However, I never imagined that that poor, creepy company would be taken over by the only set of people even more inept than its present set of managers and workers.

Really, name ONE person running that company that has been successful in a capitalist economy. (Nope, not gotten rich, that’s easy when you’re a sleazy democrat...I said successful by actually producing something people want to purchase.)
