Italy's glamorous tourism minister scored a spectacular own-goal by suggesting the banning of Siena's "Palio" horse race, one of the country's most famous traditions which dates back centuries.

Just watched one of the races on YouTube. Great fun. But Hollyweirdos are going to jump on this bandwagon bigtime. Won’t happen right away, but we can say goodbye to the Kentucky Derby. The Left always gets its way.

I saw that race in 1989. Magnificent pageantry, three laps around Siena’s “shell shaped” town square - workmen had trucked in tons of soil to cover the stone - with jockeys riding bareback (no stirrups), lots of betting and bribes.
Nothing like it! And now some Ginger Vitas with an Obama logo wants to close it down? Fahgetabottit!

One of Marguerite Henry's books. I think I read them all. Lynd Ward is probably best known for illustrating Johnny Tremain and The Swiss Family Robinson.
