Alright, texting while driving? Obviously stupid -- but that doesn't stop tons and tons of people from doing it. The Gwent Police department in Wales hopes that its newest PSA film will help deter this bad behavior. In much the same spirit as the drunk driving on prom night films we ourselves had to sit thorough in high school, this film is pretty graphic. Okay, it's actually shockingly graphic -- but we're pretty sure that's the idea. Video is after the break.
Scroll down a little for the video.
Forget lunch that day.
Didn’t see that one. Although this is described as graphic I didn’t think it was that bad. Frightening is more like it.
When I was in high school, they showed us a video about road rage that was really just an anti-2nd amendment propaganda piece.
Some guy had shot someone on the highway with a crossbow after some slight road rage incident, and the message wasn’t “keep your cool when driving” or “never confront another angry driver,” but this instead: when people have weapons they are bound to use them inappropriately at the slightest provocation.
I clearly remember a highway safety film in drivers education that starred Jack Webb (not as Sgt Friday), he played the role of a typical father driving his family down the road, he gets impatient, passes on a double-line to get around a slow moving truck and has a head on collision, he dies behind the wheel and is then seen as a ghost walking through the hospital after one of his children dies, his wife is badly injured but in the same room with the surviving child, and he watches helplessly as the doctors declare the remaining child dead from his injuries and witnessing the grief of his wife.
For all of the jokes and gags that used to be made about the stiff and taciturn nature of Jack Webb regarding his acting skills, that was one of the most powerful and chilling films I ever saw. I’ve tried to locate it many times but fear it is lost to the celluloid ages, but it made a deep impression on me and made me a better (safer) driver.
Thanks Mr. Webb, thanks very much.
They didn’t have an agenda, did they! Geeze!
Sorry DJ, I am not down with this at all.
There is a proper and responsible way to text and it should be done slowly and with care while driving.
These are the same dummies who put on makeup while driving, read crap and eat like they are in a Carl’s Junior commercial.
They just shouldn’t be allowed on the road.
BTW, most of the studies were commisioned by Cell Phone companies, with an unobjective suposition.
You see, they need to sell phones but like McDonalds, their strategy of asking if you want fries with that or in this case accessories wasn’t working.
Why? Well, it’s easier to hold the phone to your ear and it can cost damn near a thousand dollars to find the one handsfree accessory that actually works with your phone.
Do they care? No and but their problem was more revenue and they lobbied via these so called non interest groups that a greater good could be achieved if everyone were required to use hands free.
Now, why go for hands free and not outright prohibition of cell phone use during driving?
Well, they sell minutes of use on their services, much like the apple farmer wants you to buy more apples.
The more minutes you use, the more revenue and profit the generate.
Look at the friends and family programs they use to entice users, which results in more revenue and mitigates against attrition.
BTW, they are copying MCI’s program of the 1980’s which was designed for the same reason.
Look for my follow up to this.
Certainly gets the point made !
Shouldnt be distracted with GPS. Take it out.
Shouldnt be distracted with an annoying passenger like a whinny person saying we are lost, you are driving to fast (always cracks me as I watch cars go flying by), Why dont you just pass this idiot and why are you in the slow lane. Dont you know how to drive? (Cracks me up again, from the same person who complained about driving to fast.)
Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera
Shouldnt be distracted with kids in the car. Leave them home.
All wipers should be federal mandated to have laser on them so they wipe as needed and you dont have to figure out what speed to put them on or where the turn on switch thing is.
No cute toys or ornaments any where near the front window, on the dashboard or hanging from a mirror. (Sorry bobble head Chihuahua)
No cute toys or ornaments any where near the back window, on the deck or stickers. (Again, sorry bobble head Chihuahua)
No stickers on the side windows (impairs your view)
No dry cleaning hanging from anywhere in the car. Makes noise and impairs your view.
No ashtray, no smoking, no eating and drinking anything in the car (you should have both hands on the wheel at all times, in the 10 and 2 Oclock positions.
No putting on lipstick or make up ever and no shaving.
No more vanity mirrors, you shouldnt be looking at anything but the road.
No pets ever. Never know what they are going to do.
Exceptions:
Police -
3 to 5 radio channels transmitting information all the time, computer sending info all the time, GPS sending info all the time, they can talk on radio and switch to secure channels, Cell phone use is frequent. They do have drinks in car; have to look at license plates as they travel down the road, look for people in distress, look for crime, look for infractions, etc.
Truck Drivers -
CB is allowed, GPS is allowed, and Radio is allowed, pets in the front seat or back of cab, lunch, dinner and snacks. Cooler for their drinks and yes drinks, Cell phone, a bunch more dials of information to ensure the truck and trailer are running correctly.
Airline Pilots -
Just look at all that crap in the cockpit! How do they do it?
I never saw any films like that in school. I guess because I didn’t take drivers ed. Actually I don’t know if my HS HAD drivers Ed in ‘66. lol
Nobody should text while driving. That’s the point.
I thought you were joking!! A "proper way to text while driving"??? Man, you can't be serious. That's the craziest thing I've ever read. What don't you understand about the fact that you can NOT watch the road while looking at whatever you're texting?
I would love to find the video of a guy setting in a chair pretending to drive and gets in an accident and his loveing wife (angel) and daughter grab him like a seat belt and he is saved. I cried at that one.
My step-granddaughter was killed Dec 29, 2000 in a one car accident. She had her pager on the visor and apparently looked up to see who was paging her. They linked the time of the page to the time of the accident. A 19 year old, dead in a heartbeat because of inattention. For just a few seconds.
It sounds powerful. Where have all these videos gone and why aren’t they used anymore?
DJ I am very sorry for your loss.
Is that sarcasm? You can't seriously suggest that something that, by definition, requires looking away from the road is something compatible with safe driving.
Why? Well, its easier to hold the phone to your ear and it can cost damn near a thousand dollars to find the one handsfree accessory that actually works with your phone.
That's absurd. You can get a decent Bluetooth device almost anywhere for $30-$40 that works with nearly any phone.
Now, why go for hands free and not outright prohibition of cell phone use during driving? Well, they sell minutes of use on their services, much like the apple farmer wants you to buy more apples. The more minutes you use, the more revenue and profit the generate.
The vast majority of cell phone users these days have plans that give them plenty of minutes each month. Cell phone carriers are not out there trying to sell minutes. They are trying to sell $25 a month data plans.
Thank you. She was such a lovely girl. Such a waste.
Heh. I was just going to point out that PSA. It’s the best one ever made.
