Can O’Donnell Beat Castle? (You Betcha!)
National Review Online - Weekend - w/ video ^ | August 06, 2010 11:48 AM | Robert Costa

Christine O’Donnell, a conservative activist, is challenging Rep. Mike Castle, the popular congressman and former governor, in Delaware’s Sept. 14 GOP Senate primary. You may recognize her from television. On her website, she details her media history: She has appeared on Hardball, The O’Reilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes, Politically Incorrect, and Entertainment Tonight, to name a few. Once, on CNN’s Crossfire, Democratic strategist James Carville called her “one hip woman.” O’Donnell, who was recently endorsed by the Tea Party Express, stopped by National Review this week to talk about her race:

Castle - 49%

A poll of Delaware that shows “Forty-seven percent (47%) rate their personal finances as good or excellent, well above the national average.” seems to be quite a bit skewed toward a particular grouping.

Consider that Coons has not been under the gun at all, and even in his own County, he has a lot of opposition. After the Sept. 14th primary, you will see much more focus on this.

Fact remains, for a two term governor and 17 year congressman to have two consecutive polls below 50% is a devastating situation.

Strange that they didn’t poll on a head-to-head primary preference.

We shall see...

>>>In a column on Red State a week or so ago, Eric Edwards wrote that the fix is in, that Castle has already agreed to change parties after his election, and that he has essentially promised to then vacate the seat for Beau Biden. Has anyone heard more about this?<<<

Sure have, but I think there are a few tweeks necessary to that. I personally think that Castle wants to serve a while in the Senate (but not over 2 years)- He has openly said that he ‘will not be part of a Republican opposition’ and that he thinks he will have an opportunity there to be ‘more Independent’. I don’t think in their wildest imagination that anyone would think he means he will be more Conservative - to the contrary, his Liberal side will swell.

I think he will not want to be branded like Specter, so would remain in Republican party - (unless of course he had the opportunity to swing the balance of power) and would be as Liberal as any Democrat out there. (Move over Al Franken)

Then, I think he will open the door to Beau Biden for an appointment for the last two years of the term. Remember, our Dem. Governor’s term is up in 2012, I think he would do it before then.

LOL at “devestating situation”

Is this opposite world? The candidate with a 12 point lead is in a devestating situation. What would be the proper term for the other candidate who trails by 10 points?

I understand you support O’Donnell, but his is getting out of hand.

>>>LOL at “devestating situation”<<<

Not my benchmark - just look at what many others are saying about other candidates in the same situation...

In prior elections Mike Castle has garnered percentages in the 63-65% area - then falling from 55% this Spring to 47, then soaring to 49????? Nothing to crow about.

But, I guess if he can strong-arm some more Wall St. firms, big banks, and maybe find another couple of Young, Conaday bankruptcy law firms to bankroll his ever growing need to finance the vote getting. Then there is the indebtedness he has to them.... Hmmm

Each election, Michael Castle has had to spend more and more money for each percent of the voters he reaches. At the rate he is going, he will need way more than the $3 Million as he continually needs to throw more money at it.

* 2000 $10,075 for each percent
* 2002 $11,066
* 2004 $14,380
* 2006 $22,272
* 2008 $24,272
* 2010 $38,723 for each percent so far to get the 47% favorable (with 4 months to go)

That was June - Now in August, he has 49% - betcha he spent more than $75,000 to garner those votes!

I really think that THIS is what is getting out of hand.

MAYBE, if Castle paid just a little bit of attention to what his employers (We the People) are telling him they want, his job rating wouldn’t require so much money to maintain their support.

But then, that is part of the reason I AM supporting Christine.

She can beat Coons. Coons is very disliked. This state, like the rest of the country, is sick of Democrats. Coons is a midget nothing burger most Delawarians never heard of.

Let her get the nomination and she’ll beat the little twerp.

Yeah, I know about the poll but Rasmussen had another poll not long ago that O’Donnell beating Coons by three points. This seems like a big change ins such a short amount of time.

Coons....he’s got a big war chest but he’s like a nobody in Delaware. I’d lay dollar to donut Christine’s more well known than Coons.

This poll was a quickie…
Only 500 vs 1,000 in last poll.
Margin of error +/- 4.5% vs 3% on last one
Notice there was no mention of head-to-head Castle vs Christine.
The selection seems a lot skewed –
62% say their finances are good or getting better. (that one alone is very very questionable in today’s situation)

I think they may have started down a list and just stopped at 500 and the list started in NCC.

It does strike me as significant that Mike Castle – a two term Governor and 17 year Congressman now has two back to back polls where he can’t pull 50% of the voters – this from a candidate that usually draws in the high 60’s – his 2% big bounce is insignificant with a 4.5% margin of error and an unusual group polled.

“The numbers tell us he votes with the Republicans about 25% of the time. That makes the Maine girls look like pikers.

We should make this a FReeper Project, to get O’Donnell elected and kick out Castle.”

You are correct, he is one of the worst RINOs in the Congress. After having gotten rid of Specter, this is just asking for more of the same. They are useless to us.

Another year, I would have worried about a conservative having a hard time winning, so its a RINO or lib-Dem option, but this year it’s worth a shot to have a real conservative instead of a phony RINO.

Clearly the voter are way uninformed in that sample:

Fifty-four percent (54%) of all voters in Delaware regard Castle as a conservative, while 61% feel this way about O’Donnell.

Castle is NOT a conservative and ODonnell IS a conservative.
Amazing!
