If you have ever worked at a government job, please tell us some of your experiences good or bad.
They made me wear an orange vest and gave me a pointy stick and a garbage bag.
Some good people but highly infested and ladden with idiots and bureaucracy...for starters, the Naval Repair yard I used to work at has moved to allowing foreign repair crews to work on our naval ships...... =.=
I made a lot of money to just be a photo file clerk.
fed or state gov?
My light blue jumpsuit said “DOC” on the back. No one believed me when I said it stood for Dept. of Commerce. ;)
Either one.

How efficient was your place of work? What was the work ethic like, respect for the taxpayers money etc.
Huh?
So you’re thinking of getting a govt job, huh?
My experiences?
Some were good.
Some were bad.
No just curious. I have never worked for the government. No one in my family has ever had a government job.
I spent a few months as a leaf raker at a V.A. hospital. There were three of us in the crew. We’d rake leaves until we filled up a pickup truck. We then went to the city dump to dump them. We’d sit at the dump for 45 minutes to an hour. We’d then drive slowly back to the hospital. Since we’d get back only 10 or 15 minutes before our morning break, we’d take the break early. The break was supposed to be 10 minutes, but by starting early and finishing late it was usually a half hour.
Then we’d go back to raking. A 2nd trip to the dump along with time spent sitting in the truck watching the dump and we’d get back so close to lunch time that we’d break a bit early for lunch. We had the same routine for the afternoon.
Long story short, 3 men would rake up 4 pickup loads a day. Sometimes the crew chief would stop at a cafe for coffee instead of sitting at the dump, but that was always a treat.
They told me that during lawn mowing season they would sit on the mower with the engine running behind a building where their supervisor could hear but not see them. I wish I were making this up, but I’m not.
My stepson worked for the GSC in DC c. 2003. He said there were people who slept at their desks, had DVD players and TV’s and they knew they were bulletproof thanks to JFK allowing federal workers to unionize. They were offended if you asked them to do anything because they were being “singled out” unfairly.
I worked for 2 years in the elementary school lunch program. Sometimes boring — like the Lucy & Ethyl conveyor belt for first two hours — but the next 3 hours more freedom and I was with the Kids and they were fun. When I tried to make suggestions to the menu I was told everything had to be “finger food” — they wouldn’t eat anything else — I said they aren’t eating what we’re giving them now except for the high fat corn dogs, hot dogs and pizza. All the raw carrots, celery & fruit went into the trash.
I left when they told me the following year they were going to start giving “free” breakfast and were looking into an after school food program. That was too much.
Crap lunches imo and if I had a kid in the system I’d be sendin’ a brown bag. If you’ve got a kid or grandkid in elementary school drop by at lunch time & observe.
Opsec and Persec are there for a reason.

The job was somewhat rewarding back when I started in 1979.
However, the past 10 years sucked.....the mission of my agency went to pot....it was more social programs, paperwork, CR & EEO training....Hardly anything to do with the original mission of the agency.
I counted the days to retirement. After 30 years & 2 weeks, I jumped.
Lots of sucky memories.
One of the biggest is back around 2004 when the Texas office stashed away funds to put on a giant employees meeting in Ft. Worth. It was mandatory for the 1000 employees and it was held just prior to Xmas. No vacations until after Xmas were approved. The money came from the 2003 budget but was squirreled away so as not to lose it.
The cost of the “employees meeting” was over $1 million for the 4 days. It was justified as a “training session.”
I worked for an agency in the USDA.
