If you don't know the symptoms, mention certain issues to your doctor during a check up, or have a doc that checks your A1c as part of a bloodwork battery, you can carry it around for years and not realize it. By then, it's already done damage. Mine was first flagged by a company nurse during casual conversation.

a friend of mine was diagnosed as diabetic, and he only found out when a small cut became infected and would not heal.
