He was the first black actor to become a millionaire, but he was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1947 w/ only $146 to his name. Probably b/c of gambling-—his screen name was based on a winning race horse.
He reportedly converted to Islam in the 1960s. Civil rights leaders criticized him for the film roles he portrayed. However in 1976, the Hollywood chapter of the NAACP awarded him a Special Image Award. Two years later, he was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.
In April 1969, his son, Donald Lambright, traveled the Pennsylvania Turnpike shooting people. He injured 15 and killed 3 before turning the gun on himself.
