Letters, cookies, chocolate and other goodies are staples of care packages sent to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. For some, so is a carton of smokes or a few cans of chewing tobacco.
But a recently adopted postal regulation limits the mailing of tobacco products to 10 ounces or less, a restriction that has made it difficult for family members to send the items to their loved ones in combat zones.
So Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, has introduced a bill that would provide an exemption to the regulation.
A carton of cigarettes weighs more than 20 ounces and a single can of chew weighs about 1.2 ounces.
Hunter's bill, introduced Friday, seeks an exemption to the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act or PACT Act recently passed by Congress to prevent cigarette smuggling by mail to avoid taxes. The act exempts tobacco mailings between individuals for noncommercial use, but each package must weigh less than 10 ounces.

I remember getting cartons of smokes at the PX for about 3 bucks.
Obama would prefer that they smoke pole in a war zone.
I hate this administration.
Obvious why Congress Approval Rating is only at 9 percent.
:)))
As much as I hate smoking, I oppose this law on libertarian / small-government principles. That said, if it can’t be stopped altogether, by all means chip away at it around the edges.
Yup. Stand at.....Ease! Smokem if ya gottem.
My late husband got very cheap cigarettes while in Korea. He smoked 4 packs a day there. When I met him ten years letter he was a 3 pack a day man. I am allergic to tobacco, and would not have married him if he had not decided to quit cold turkey when he had a big reseach project that he needed to do on deadline in a no smoking library. For the next 6 months he was coughing up horrible black mucous gobs, which shocked the heck out of him.
A friend was in the Virginia foster care system from the age of 8. Virginia is a big tobacco state. He and the other kids were given free cigarettes, and now at 49 with a fatal illness facing him tobacco is the last bad habit he has been unable to kick.
I hate smoking, can’t stand it, but believe me, if I was in a war zone, I’d be smoking a couple of packs a day. Those damn marxists want to control everything
The PACT act has all the buzzwords in it. It even goes so far as to claim that it’s fighting funding for terrorism. The truth is that Altidis (Phillip Morris) was behind it. It was passed so that Altidis’ smaller competitors who produce generic and off brands, are now unable to compete. The government acted to wipe out their competition.
under random harrassing artillery fire,, a smoke can make hands stop shaking. In the rear, it’s best to break it before you are hooked.
What kind of vicious bastard denies a grunt a smoke, because it could be a risk *to a GRUNTS health*? I cannot find words for how badly i hate these SOBs.
In ‘73, I think they were even less than that at the Ft. Bragg PX. I don’t think NC had a cigarette tax.
And this same G D dictatorship that is so worried about protecting grunts from a cigarette is busily teaching 2nd graders that anal sex is safe and normal. No smoke,,, but up the wazzoo is just FINE!
November,, the counter revolution begins. FUBO!
Here’s an off the wall question:
Are there any restrictions against growing tobacco for one’s personal use or consumption?
My job in ‘60-’62 was on the flight deck and catapult console just below on an aircraft carrier.
When at sea, a carton of cigs was only $1. When deployed on a Med cruise for many months, we had ration cards that permitted us to buy 2 cartons every two weeks. Non-smokers sold their ration cards to the smokers.
Not something I’m proud of, but I’ve been a smoker for 55 years and I have experienced no adverse effects on my health.
This is said to be a very good site...

After looking at the referenced article, I still don’t know what Hunter’s bill actually says.
It would seem to be simplest to exempt all APO/FPO destinations. Is that what’s in the bill?
You can look it up when the Library of Congress gets the bill text. As of now...
“The text of H.R.6037 has not yet been received from GPO
Bills are generally sent to the Library of Congress from the Government Printing Office a day or two after they are introduced on the floor of the House or Senate. Delays can occur when there are a large number of bills to prepare or when a very large bill has to be printed.”
> Damn straight. And WTF business of the US government’s is it anyway. Get the bloody F*** out of the tobacco bizness, Uncle Sam!
Well stated, pissant.
I don’t smoke, but when I was in combat many years ago, I remember some of my buddies who were in the field and had forgotten to bring enough for the patrol. Trust me, they need their smokes. The smokes will keep them alert and alive.
