Former U.S. secretary of State George P. Shultz believes it's crucial to fight global warming to protect national security.
Global warming is created by burning fossil fuel, he says, and payments for foreign oil sometimes wind up financing terrorism.
And Shultz, who's also a former Treasury secretary, thinks the nation suffers an "economic vulnerability" because of its oil addiction.
"While we have benefited from low-priced energy," he says, "we've also suffered from periodic spikes in the price of oil. Usually recessions go along with it."
Moreover, continues the man who set up the Environmental Protection Agency four decades ago, "There's a climate problem connected with the burning of fossil fuels.... The basic facts are pretty clear."
"So we have a three-pronged set of problems" created by greenhouse gases, he says. "Security, economic and environmental."
Shultz, 89, has been there, done a lot and thought through much from the time he was President Nixon's first budget director to when he was President Reagan's chief strategist for ending the Cold War.

The ballot measure (Prop 23) is a major issue in the gubernatorial campaign at least, in Democrat Jerry Brown's view. He calls the global-warming fight a defining distinction between him and Republican Meg Whitman. Brown strongly opposes Prop. 23. Whitman is neutral but favors at least a one-year moratorium on AB 32.
Shultz also is a co-chairman of Whitman's campaign. But he disagrees with her on global warming. Suspending AB 32, he says, "would be a catastrophe."

Much of AB 32 is already taking place. They have hundreds of State employees doing everything from collecting data to developing cap-and-trade systems. IMO, that is the stuff that will continue on, even if Prop 23 passes. So, if Prop 23 passes, I hope someone introduces another Prop for total and permanent revocation of AB 32.
I spent last week in Alaska. It was sunny and warm though I didn’t expect it to be. I can imagine how those who come to SD hoping to see sunny and warm must be disappointed.
Too bad Meg and George couldn’t debate this one at Bohemian Grove.. what a sight that would be. :-)
off the deep end.. Oh Yeah.
If she weren't a rank amateur, who would you suggest she have as the chair or two co-chairs of her campaign?
It just piles higher and deeper with Meg.
Hey, “truthguy,” You’re REALLY living up to your excellent name!!!
Reading about Meg’s $1.5 million contribution to a Telluride landgrab put her over the edge for me.
Who cares that the owner didn’t want to sell - they condemned it anyway.
“Endangered Historic Places” - Pfffft!

Residential development currently lines the north side of the highway leading to Telluride, while the south sidea parcel of approximately 570 acresremains open space. The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the nations largest preservation organization, placed the Valley Floor on its list of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places” in 2000.

In 2002, a citizen-initiated ordinance was presented to the voters of Telluride. It asked the Telluride Town Council to pursue eminent domaina governments right to acquire private property for public use for just compensation, also known as condemnation. The ordinance, which passed by a 63 percent majority, stipulates that upon acquisition of the south-side property, Telluride will place the land under a conservation easement to be preserved as open space in perpetuity.
The Colorado Constitution grants local governments the power of eminent domain. Municipalities such as Boulder, Colorado, have resorted to eminent domain to acquire open space, as did New York City to acquire the land for Central Park. In March 2004, Telluride filed a petition for condemnation.
Meg Whitman will support Clinton for president
The Hill ^ | August 2, 2016 | Rebecca Savransky
A Hewlett-Packard executive and Republican fundraiser said Tuesday she will back Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for president. Meg Whitman said she plans to give a “substantial” contribution to Clinton’s campaign to make sure Republican nominee Donald Trump doesn’t become the next president....
