Report: Turkey could host advanced U.S. radar to confront Iran missile threat

Turkey is poised to become the first line of global defense against the threat of Iranian ballistic missiles, with the United States considering installing sophisticated radar systems in the country, according to a U.S. report.

According to the Washington Post, the U.S. is close to activating a partial missile shield over southern Europe. As part of the deployment, Department of Defense officials are nearing a deal with either Turkey or Bulgaria to install high-powered X-band radar.

If a deal goes through, the initial phase of the shield could become operational during 2011, the Post said.

Plans by the previous U.S. administration of George W. Bush for a missile shield across all of eastern Europe strained America's relations with Russia. But the current U.S. government under President Barak Obama has pressed on with the project, adopting a gradual approach that will see a more flexible shield system take shape by 2020.

America will likely integrate a Turkish radar capability with parts of its regional shield based aboard its Meditarranean fleet, as well as with systems it has sold to the United Arab Emirates...

Yeah Bush wanted the shield to protect our European allies where Obama wants to protect the muzzies.

I would suspect that Turkey would use the technology, access, and radars if they can be redirected, against the US and NATO before they would be used against Iran.

Yep. It would only be a matter of time before Turkey seized the radar system, reverse engineered it and sold it to Iran and other radical muslim countries.

Not the “muzzis.” The sunni muslims (Turkey and Saudi Arabia) from shiite muslims (Iran).

Even most freepers still don’t get that distinction. And they still don’t understand that sunnis and shiites have killed more of each other than anyone else. By far.

Indonesia (where obama grew up) is sunni, too. So he’s using US weaponry to help sunnis kill shiites. Perfectly in keeping with his upbringing. That’s why I also expect an October surprise in the form of obama attacking Iran.

...but wait a minute. Is the US tempting Turkey with advanced US weaponry while they move into the Axis of Evil camp? I don’t get it. Can someone explain the logic of this idiotic move? Thanks.

This is a really bad idea. Turkey is radicalizing quickly. About the time we get them installed, a bunch of Islamist crazies will either destroy them or nationalize them. Or limit how we can use them.

You can get too sophisticated sometimes. Most Freepers understand the difference between the two. The Saudi’s are Sunni’s and financed and manned 911 and have created a network of Madrassas and Mosques that are radicalizing Muslims all over the world. The Iranians are Shia’s and have desperately worked to undermine Iraq and took US hostages and fund Hezbollah and Hamas. Iraq is all mixed up etc.

Of course, I’m in favor of having them direct their destructive tendencies at each other instead of us. But basically, there is considerably less than a dime’s worth of difference from a standpoint of their threat to the US. So I’m not offended at all by the inclusive term. When the distinction is germane—ie playing one off against the other—then it’s sometimes a useful distinction.

But they all read the same Koran and worship the same demon. Their holy book tells them to conquer and subjugate the entire world. When they become Moslem Unitarians, maybe I’m not so opposed to letting them (as a group, no distinctions) play next to decent people.

Oh, I generally agree. Think I wasn’t clear about my point:

Obama isn’t defending the US or Europe here. If/when we attack Iran, he won’t be defending the US then.

He’ll be defending sunnis against shiites, and doing it by spending American treasure and blood. But the lestist will spin it as him defending the US. That’s what I want people to watch out for.

Now, all that said, a nuclear Iran cannot be permitted.

Confront? Iran just tried to secure Iran’s nuclear refining program for its nukes.

Thanks for that explanation. The world indeed has been turned on it’s head but you can’t just blame the “Annointed One”. In the end it is the “We the people” who must either think or drink and determine the direction of this great republic. The “Annointed One” is a by-product of our flawed thinking and unrealistic hopes. Time to batten down the hatches and dive...dive...dive!
