A UK supermarket chain has sparked outrage by stocking squirrel meat on the shelves of one of its stores. Neil Duggard, branch manager of Budgens at Crouch End, North London, has said there is "huge interest" in the meat which was once a staple of the British diet. Animal rights groups are up in arms, however. "it is very sad that Budgens are allowing profit to be made from wildlife massacre," said Juliet Gellatley of Viva. "If this store is attempting to stand out from the crowd by selling squirrel, the only message they are giving out is that they are happy to have the blood of a beautiful wild animal on their hands for the sake of a few quid. Viva claims that many squirrels are left to die for days on end after being clubbed. Squirrel meat is well known for its nutty flavour.
Judging by Prince Charles, this could be a case of Cannibalism.
Boris and Natasha must be doing business in England..
That’s hilarious!
Correct, but both are in rodent family. I have never eaten rat, don't plan on it. As far as missing a meal, I suspect you are correct. But I can hunt and fish here and not go hungry. If push came to shove, I could be totally food and fuel independent here. An advantage of living in fly-over country. However, it would not be a pleasant change. (My ancestors moved here in the mid 1880's, the town was formed after 1900)
I read of an invention that helps smoke rats out of holes that ups the production of “rat hunters” in India.
The guy they interviewed said he gets 50 cents a rat that he catches/kills, and he can have the rice that the rat had stored in its hole.
With the new invention he has doubled his catch. Not only does he have double the reward money, but more rice too. And not only can he feed his own family, but the extra his wife cooks up and sells.
He will now be able to send his two kids to school so they won’t have to be rat catchers.
The invention is a bellows type thing to blow smoke into the holes - cost is $25. Still out of reach for a rat hunter to pay, so funding, payment schedules, etc. are set up to help.
Amazing how a disgusting rodent (a rat) to us, is a way of life - and a way to make a living - for others.
Squirrel is okay, but I prefer rabbit. Well, Pheasant I think is my favorite wild meat.
If they are using clubs to hunt squirrels, it's perfectly safe - for the squirrels :-)
OK how is that working out?
Shari Lewis used to order lamb at restaurants, just to freak people out - true story.
What is wrong with eating squirrel meat? We used to have it all the time when I was kid. And squirrel season starts here in NC Oct 1; looking forward to it!
Exactly right. And if Obama has his way, most of us may get to find out.
We live in orchard / winery country. Squirrels were eradicated a hundred years ago. My garden is thriving.
Well, what else would you expect from someone who would name her puppet companion Lambchop? :=)
“Only animals that arent cute are to be eaten.”
We had a couple Beefalo cows that calfed here on our place about 8 years ago. We raised one of the calves and then had it butchered. We ate it and enjoyed it. Beef is food. Beefalo is food.
I am reminded about the first Passover. The Israelites were to bring a lamb into the house and keep it there as a pet. Then they had to ‘sacrifice’ it in a special way and eat all of the meat. They had to butcher and eat their pet lamb.
I believe God gave us certain animals for food, and some, if we are in the business of raising the critters, we can become attached to. It works that way. It is no reason to be a vegan. Veganism is not healthy.

Many folks forget (or never knew) that, for many years, the finest and most expensive and accurate muzzle-loading rifles were purpose-built "squirrel rifles".
My mother (who taught me to hunt and shoot) said that (at ten years of age) during the Depression, she was frequently handed three .22 shells and a single-shot rifle, sent out at daybreak -- and told to come back with three squirrels for breakfast...
My favorite is quail, but I like deer venison, elk, wild hog and all kinds of fish.
I thank God that I do not live in India. My son-in-law just got back from 2 weeks there. He was appalled. He and my daughter live near Austin in Hutto, TX. He had a similar reaction to business trips to China, but not as bad.
“...if we are in the business of raising the critters, we can become attached to.”
The family visited my cousin on a ranch every once in awhile. The second time we were there my daughter was asking about Norman, their pet calf. My cousin said “You’re eating him”. (We were having wonderful hamburgers she had made!)
I think we should arm all squirrels with light sabers.
IN my parts there are too many pine trees and the meat tastes like turpentine.
For some strange reason the squirrels had left my pear trees alone for close to 15 years, only to erradicate all the fruit this year.
Still working on my plan for revenge.
Rabbit is on the menu in many places. Is a squirrel so different? In South America they raise guinea pigs to eat as well.
