A UK supermarket chain has sparked outrage by stocking squirrel meat on the shelves of one of its stores. Neil Duggard, branch manager of Budgens at Crouch End, North London, has said there is "huge interest" in the meat which was once a staple of the British diet. Animal rights groups are up in arms, however. "it is very sad that Budgens are allowing profit to be made from wildlife massacre," said Juliet Gellatley of Viva. "If this store is attempting to stand out from the crowd by selling squirrel, the only message they are giving out is that they are happy to have the blood of a beautiful wild animal on their hands for the sake of a few quid. Viva claims that many squirrels are left to die for days on end after being clubbed. Squirrel meat is well known for its nutty flavour.
Squirrel is delicious. If I had a last meal, I would ask for squirrel.

Woman: Well there’s rat cake ... rat sorbet... rat pudding... or strawberry tart.
Man: Strawberry tart?!
Woman: Well it’s got some rat in it.
Man: How much?
Woman: Three, rather a lot really.
Man: ... well, I’ll have a slice without so much rat in it.
Whoever thought that squirrel tastes nutty has never had squirrel. It is similar to rabbit, but a bit sweeter.
When I see the finished product ready to eat, I do not expect to see a kin to the dead animal lying next to it.
Squirrel dumplins rule.
I saw the first Buzzard, a couple of days ago, since I left Idaho. It was eating a dead squirrel, tree rat. No mistaking the naked head.
The nuts are complaining about the stores selling nutty flavored meat.
I suppose if I were starving I could eat a squirrel to survive.
Until then, I’ll stick to murdering the larger creatures, such as prime rib, steak, hamburgers and all the other dangerous animals.
I am a predator and I am carnivorous, do not mess with my meat.
Squirrel, the other white meat.
Mmmmmm...
Ground squirrels are NOT eating squirrels. The gray squirrel is the only Squirrel worth eating in CA, and up north we have plenty of them. I love to eat them and I see nothing wrong with these people selling squirrel meat. Another meat that is over looked in markets is rabbit. Rabbit is as tasty as chicken, it has a different flavor but it is very good.
I guess they never know when Jed and Jethro are going to get lost in London and wander into their store - gotta be prepared.
A buddy of mine, who’s the most avid hunter I’ve ever met, swears that squirrel gravy is the best gravy ever.
I wish my supermarket would stock it.
I’m pretty sure I’d like it.
Steak and chicken are boring foods.

Sounds great. I love rabbit.
Chances are pretty good that most squirrels eat nuts.
Only the gray squirrel is being eaten. Grey squirrels are an invasive species, which has been crowding out the (much smaller) indigenous red squirrel.
Environmentalists fully supported a cull of the Grey squirrel — in order to protect the Red squirrel. The government has helped promote a market for squirrel meat — so that there would be financial incentives for people to hunt Grey squirrels.
Only Grey squirrels are allowed to be hunted — and the Red squirrel is too small to have any market value as meat.
Self-proclaimed “animal rights” activists are at odds with environmentalists on this one. They are completely ignoring the rights of the indigenous Red squirrels, which are being brutally evicted from their habitat.
(BTW, if you substitute “Muslim” for “Grey squirrel”, this story makes an interesting fable.)
