RNC Chair Steele cancels San Diego appearance (food poisoning)

SAN DIEGO — Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele canceled a highly anticipated appearance before a group of journalists scheduled for Friday afternoon in downtown San Diego.

Steele could not make the talk because of a case of food poisoning, according to the National Association of Black Journalists.

NABJ officials said they learned Friday morning that Steele fell ill while traveling to the event.

They quoted a statement from the RNC that said Steele “is disappointed to miss the opportunity to take part in this valuable dialogue and looks forward to engaging with NABJ in the very near future.”

The association had planned to host him at its annual convention at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in a session with NABJ Secretary and journalist Roland Martin, titled “Life, Liberty and Legacy.”

Steele, the first African American RNC Chairman and a former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland , has been criticized for a series of controversial statements he’s made during his tenure. Some suggested he resign as recently as July after his comments that the war in Afghanistan was of President Barack Obama’s choosing and had probably turned into a “lost cause” for the United States.

NABJ officials said they asked the RNC if there was any tie between Steele’s cancellation and an upcoming fundraiser in California at which both Steele and conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart are scheduled to appear. They said they were told by an RNC official that the organization didn’t comment on its finance events.

On Thursday, NABJ had hosted former Agriculture department official Shirley Sherrod, who was asked to resign after Breitbart posted video of excerpts of a speech she gave that gave the impression to some that she was racist. It was later clarified that she had been telling a larger story about her changing attitude and federal officials apologized to Sherrod and offered her another job.

Rumors were that he was digging through obama's trash looking for some scraps of Wagyu beef.
