It's a tourist destination usually associated with beer-swilling Brits, but U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama is set to holiday with daughter Sasha on Spain's Costa del Sol.
Mother and daughter are due to travel to the resort of Marbella in southern Spain next week for a private trip with long-time family friends, the White House announced today.
But Barack Obama, who turns 49 on 4 August, will celebrate his birthday home alone while elder daughter Malia, 12, attends summer camp back in the States. The Obamas tour Ghana in 2009
Despite the unusual choice of holiday destination, Mrs Obama, who will be on the Costa del Sol between 4 and 8 August with nine-year-old Sasha, has reserved 30 rooms at a five-star hotel.

With a reputation as Spain's most exclusive hotel, room prices start at 250 euros (£210) for a standard double and rise up to 5,000 euros (£4,175) for a private villa within the gardens.The tourist spot has gained a reputation for being something of a party town
Mrs Obama and Sasha will be accompanied by an entourage of secret service personnel who will follow their every move.
The cost of housing the First Lady and her entourage could raise questions back in the U.S. over the use of taxpayers's money.
Mrs Obama will pay an official visit to Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia. Spanish newspapers today reported that the royal family had invited her to join them at their summer palace on Majorca in the Mediterranean.
The Obamas will spend four nights at Spain's most exclusive hotel, the Villa Padierna on the Costa del Sol near Marbella
However Mrs Obama will miss her husband's 49th birthday on August 4.

This is, what, the fourth holiday in less than 90 days? States are going bankrupt, families in the Gulf have lost their livelihood (not to mention the environmental damage to the region), horrible misuse of American tax dollars in Pakistan has been unveiled, more and more young men are being killed in a horribly managed conflict in Afghanistan.... But the president makes time for appearing on "The View" and on Jay Leno's show, and even makes time to take a fourth vacation. Bush made lots of mistakes, but I can't recall that he took four vacations in four months.

That was always the argument I wanted presented regarding the birth certificate: How were we supposed to know his age? The president not only has to be a natural born citizen, but he has to be a certain age as well - (35 yrs?) He could never prove his age with out his bc.

Spain is fantastic. I hope they have a great time. I can just imagine when Sarah is president we are going to criticize every move she makes on this site????? I believe we will say something like she deserves it. So what that she has taken a few weekends off. She works so hard.....I can see it now.

What does this mean? She has no say in American politics and she is not a representative of the USA. And who all is she taking with her to need 30 rooms. You know the SS will be holed up in maybe two different rooms so why the other 28 rooms. Like many have said we have over 10% unemployment and people are loosing their homes and she runs off to Spain on our dime. Is there a limit to how much they can screw us out of in way of parties and such?
