Schilling campaign’s poll shows him over Hare +13 (Safe Illinois Dem District going GOP)

A poll conducted by Magellan Strategies for Bobby Schilling’s congressional campaign has him leading U.S. Rep. Phil Hare 45 percent to 32 percent.

The automated survey was conducted July 12 and more than 700 responses were then weighted to reflect historic county turnouts for the November election. The result is supposed to have a statistical margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.

Hare’s campaign may question whether the poll was worded in a way that would tend to push responses in a specific direction. They also do not care for Magellan Strategies, which is considered a Republican firm.

The poll results still should be troubling for the incumbent. Even if this was not a toss-up polling unit, the Democrat leaning 17th District has been seen for the past eight years as a safe place for U.S. Rep. Lane Evans and now his successor. If a poll of any type can show a 13-point lead for a first-time GOP challenger, this represents a major sea change in the district’s politics.

Hare is the Dem congressman who said "I don't care about the constitution..." on video. Looks like he is headed for retirement.

Internal polls can be notoriiously stilted - regardless of whatever party uses ‘em. I take ‘em with a grain of salt

But if Schilling actually is within single digits of Lane Evans, that bodes well for the GOP.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this poll has some truth to it.

I agree but Magellan strategies from what I’ve been able to find is a reliable polling firm even if it is partisan. Showing a +13 point lead would require major fudging to accomplish. Also I found that Hare’s re-electability ratings were in the tank. People in the district appear to be ready to vote for anyone but Hare. Independents are especially sour on Hare.

It’s an obscenely-gerrymandered district in western Illinois. Take a look at this:

Obscene doesn’t even begin to begin to describe the disgust I feel whenever i think of my FORMER residence (FORGOTONIA)west central ILL. Those damn Dems will do anything to maintain their seats. Maybe, just maybe, cooler heads will prevail this time now that ol’ Lane is truly out of the picture. Hare is a complete clown and has no business in a leadership role.

Jeez, I got to get off of this planet.
