This may come as a shock to you, but there are stores in Buffalo that accept (gasp) Canadian dollars!

Not only that, but it’s probably good for the local economy. Illegal in the US will be paying with US dollars anyway, so anyone who uses pesos is probably a tourist or visitor.

This is a private store. They have the right to accept whatever form of payment they wish.
No one is forcing anyone to shop there. If we do not like it... then we can shop someplace else.

Looking for my local HEB (Texas) to begin accepting pesos.
Why not?
All the stuff they sell is labeled in Spanish.

There isno reason for a private business not to accept whatever currency it can handle profitably.

This may come as a shock to you, but there are stores in Buffalo that accept (gasp) Canadian dollars! A couple of years ago, coming back from Canada, I had almost $10 Canadian in my pocket. We stopped in Buffalo to eat and I gave all of it to a waitress as a tip. She was very happy to get it.

"All the stuff they sell is labeled in Spanish."That was actually a business decision by HEB several years ago. I remember seeing a speech by an HEB executive I think in 2003. He said they were specifically targeting Hispanic customers as part of a marketing strategy to deal with the entrance of Wal-mart into the grocery business. They knew they could not compete with Wal-mart on price, so they decided to target specific market segments.

With the dollar close to par these days, that’s pretty generous.

I don’t think there’s anything specific about it.
I shop at suburban HEB’S. Arroz and leche desnatada is there as it is in the barrios.

From the article:
Some locally owned stores in the area also accept dollars and pesos, and the Pizza Patron chain began accepting Mexican currency more than three years ago.

So some people are paying in foreign currency. Big deal!

But a $25 dollar dress costs 317 pesos.

And likewise when I crossed into Canada at Niagara Falls, every establishment I stepped into accepted US currency. I appreciated the convenience. Smart business to accommodate near a border.
Unclench.

A couple of years ago I went into our local WestTx. Ross looking for something. I couldn't find it, but I found 3 women working together, I asked them, they told me they didn't speak English and one had to go find a manager to come over to help me. I didn't go back until recently, to see if things had improved. They have some, but the check-out girl (Mexican) was giving the customers tips on how to go about getting freebies here in town, who to talk to, who to avoid, etc.
Mervyns used to be a decent store, until they hired Mexican managers who hired all Mexican clerks who catered to and waited on first all the Mexican customers. You couldn't walk down any aisle without walking on merchandise dropped in the floor. I was in one day and found three Mexican women sitting on the floor of one aisle with their children eating a lunch they'd brought in from McDonalds. I gave up on shopping there and it wasn't many months later that the store closed down. Ross isn't much better now and I've wondered how long before they close too.
